Fashanu Picks Up First-Team All-American Honors From Sporting News

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu was named a first-team All-American by Sporting News on Wednesday. Fashanu picked up his third first-team All-American honor by an NCAA-recognized outlet, joining first team honors from the Associated Press and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. He was also tabbed a second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
 
With his third first-team honor from one of the five NCAA-recognized outlets (Associated Press, AFCA, FWAA, Sporting News, Walter Camp), Fashanu fulfilled the requirements to be a consensus All-American.
 
Fashanu is Penn State's 41st player to earn consensus All-American status (44 overall selections) and the fourth player in the James Franklin era, joining Micah Parsons (2019), Saquon Barkley (2017) and Carl Nassib (2015).
 
He is Penn State's first offensive lineman to garner consensus All-American status since Jeff Hartings in 1995.
 
The junior is Penn State's 102nd first-team All-American in school history and its first, first-team selection since linebacker Micah Parsons in 2019. He is one of Penn State's 16 All-American selections in the James Franklin era.
 
Fashanu is Penn State's first offensive lineman to earn multiple first-team All-American nods from NCAA-recognized outlets since A.Q. Shipley (FWAA, Walter Camp) in 2008 and the first offensive lineman to collect All-America honors from multiple NCAA-recognized outlets since Stefan Wisniewski in 2010.
 
In the James Franklin era, Fashanu is one of seven players (eight occasions) who have received All-American recognition from multiple NCAA-recognized outlets, joining  Joey Porter Jr. (2022), Jaquan Brisker (2021), Jordan Stout (2021), Micah Parsons (2019, consensus), Saquon Barkley (2017, consensus/2016), and Carl Nassib (2015, consensus).
 
On November 29, Fashanu was voted Rimington-Pace Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year. Fashanu garnered first-team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and media. The 2023 team captain was also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and was a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award.
 
This season, Fashanu has allowed no sacks and 11 pressures in 382 pass blocking snaps. He has made 22 career starts at left tackle.
 
Led by Fashanu, the Penn State offense ranks fourth in the country in red zone conversion percentage (95.1), 14th in scoring offense (37.2), 26th in rushing offense (186.7; 1st in Big Ten), while holding 10th in time of possession (33:02). PSU has tallied a Big Ten-best 271 first downs.
 
Penn State has posted 50+ points three times and 40+ points five times this season. The Nittany Lions have tallied at least 400 total yards in five games, including a season-high 586 yards at Michigan State.
 
No. 10 Penn State is set to make it first appearance in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl when the Nittany Lions take on No. 11 Ole Miss on Saturday, December 30. Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
 
Penn State finished the regular season with a 42-0 win at Michigan State to improve to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in Big Ten action. The Nittany Lions reached 10 wins in a season for the 26th time and reached 10 wins in the regular season for the 21st time. In addition, Penn State reached 10 wins for the fifth time since 2016.
 
Penn State is one of 11 FBS teams with at least 10 wins in at least five of the last eight seasons, joining Alabama (8), Boise State (6), Clemson (7), Georgia (6), Michigan (6), Notre Dame (5), Ohio State (7), Oklahoma (6), Troy (5) and Washington (5).
 
Penn State clinched its second-straight 10+ win season, joining Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Troy, Tulane and Washington as teams who have posted 10+ win seasons in 2022 and 2023. The Nittany Lions reached 10+ wins for the fifth time in the James Franklin era and earned seven Big Ten wins for the eighth time in program history.
