No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse Welcomes Cornell on Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- No. 18 Penn State women's lacrosse concludes its regular season non-conference play with a Sunday afternoon game against long-time opponent Cornell. First draw is set for 3 p.m. at Panzer Stadium following the conclusion of the men's lacrosse game.
 
The Nittany Lions look for their sixth consecutive win in their series against the Big Red. Cornell looks to snap a two-game losing streak and Penn State will aim to bounce back from a tough loss to Northwestern on Thursday (3/30).
 
Penn State is the number 18 team in the country this week according to the IL/IWCLA Poll and are ranked third in the Big Ten.

GAME PROMOTION

  • Sunday will be 'youth day' at Panzer Stadium. There will be a caricature artist as well as a face painter. 
  • This will be the team's Morgan's Message dedication game. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Bowan is responsible for bringing the organization to Penn State in its first year on campus.
  • Following the game, the team will be available to sign autographs and interact with kids on the field. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State dropped its first Big Ten game of the season at No. 2 Northwestern on Thursday.
  • Despite a close 9-7 deficit at halftime, the Wildcats pulled away in the second half to a 19-9 victory.
  • Junior Gretchen Gilmore scored her fourth hat trick in five games.
  • The Penn State defense caused 13 Northwestern turnovers.
  • Junior Kristin O'Neill continued a 16-game scoring streak. 

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State ranks first in the country in caused turnovers (130) and first in the Big Ten as well as third nationally in ground balls (221).
  • The Nittany Lions are second in the conference in shots on goal per game (33.33) and 13th in the country. 
  • Sammy Dupcak ranks 13th nationally in ground balls (32) and is second in the conference. She is also third in the Big Ten and 15th nationally in caused turnovers (10).
  • Kristin O'Neill is 14th in the country in goals (37) and fourth in the Big Ten.

PENN STATE –CORNELL SERIES

  • The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series with the Big Red 13-3. The meetings date back to their first one in 1968.
  • The most recent game ended in a 20-11 Penn State win at Cornell last season in February.
  • O'Neill had a five-goal outing in the contest last season and Meghan Murray had a four-goal performance. Hoss also contributed two goals.
  • The Nittany Lions are 5-2 in home games against the Big Red.

SCOUTING THE BIG RED

  • Cornell is 6-4 so far this season and looking to snap a two-game losing streak with recent losses to No. 17 Princeton and No. 1 Syracuse.
  • Katie Castiello leads the Big Red offense with 30 goals this season. 
  • Shannon Brazier heads the defense with 15 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and also has 29 draw controls. 
  • Cornell is 2-1 in Ivy play with wins against Columbia and Dartmouth and a loss to Princeton. 

NITTANY LIONS TO WATCH

  • O'Neill and Dupcak were named ILWomen Midseason All-American Honorable Mentions. This is O'Neill's second year receiving the distinction.
  • Sophomore defender Ellie Hollin was named the IL/IWLCA and Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week after leading the defense to a first half shut out in a 13-3 win over Ohio State (3/25).
  • Junior Gilmore was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and IL/IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week this week (3/21) after her 10-goal performance last week. She posted four goals in a 13-12 win over Towson and six goals in a 16-14 win at No. 14 Princeton.
  • O'Neill, Dupcak and Ellie Hollin were named Big Ten Players to Watch in the preseason.
  • O'Neill was also named to The Tewaaraton Award Watch List and selected by Inside Lacrosse as a Top 100 Returning Player at the start of this season.
  • Freshmen Erika Ho, Maggie Golder and Emma Kelly were placed on Inside Lacrosse's Power Top 100 Freshman List.

2023 CAPTAINS

  • Head coach Missy Doherty named seniors Rachel Spilker and Regan Nealon and junior Kristin O'Neill as captains for the 2023 season.
  • This is Spilker's second season as a co-captain for the Nittany Lions. 

 Parking and Ticket Information

  • Tickets are walk-up only, $5 adults, youth $3.
  • Parking for all Penn State Athletics' non-football events will require a valid permit or payment of the applicable parking fee for campus lots. Fans with valid Penn State University Park parking permits will be permitted to park at non-football athletics events for free, following Transportation Services parking policies and access.
  • For women's lacrosse games, fans are asked to park in the Jordan East, Stadium West or Porter North lots. Fans without a permit are encouraged to prepay for event parking at a discounted rate of $5.50 through ParkMobile - https://psu.parkmobile.io/. Prepayment is available through 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each event. Event day parking will be $20 per vehicle and is cash only/can be purchased on the ParkMobile app. The East Deck is also available for most events for $1 per hour.
