No. 23 Women’s Gymnastics Set for Saturday Night Matchup at Nebraska

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — No. 23 Penn State women's gymnastics (5-3, 1-3 Big Ten) will travel to Nebraska (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) to compete in a 7 p.m. meet against the Cornhuskers in the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday night.

The Nittany Lions earned their second-highest score this season on the road last week against Ohio State. The team earned a 196.650 against the Buckeyes, its highest road score of the season. Sophomore Amani Herring posted a career-best 9.95 on beam which helped the team tie their season-best beam total with 49.325 points. Herring and Isabella Salcedo became the first pair of teammates to score two 9.95-or-better on beam in a single season since 2015.
Nebraska is No. 26 in the country right now after falling to Maryland on Saturday. Penn State is 6-29-0 all-time against the Cornhuskers since their first meeting in 1983.

LAST TIME OUT 
 
Penn State earned two 49.300-or-better scores for the first time this season. The Nittany Lions hit the mark on floor and beam on the road against Ohio State last week.
 
VAULT — No. 24
 
Ava Piedrahita led the team with a score of 9.875. Herring and Maddie Johnston both collected 9.8s on the apparatus in the team's second rotation of the day.
 
BARS — No. 35
 
Cassidy Rushlow posted a 9.875, leading the pack for Penn State. Gabbie Gallentine and Johnston both earned 9.825s while Kalea McElligott posted a 9.8. The Nittany Lions started strong in their first rotation, scoring a 49.100 on the apparatus.
 
BEAM — No. 13
 
Herring scored a career-beest 9.95 while Johnston and Salcedo collected 9.875s. McElligott rounded out the top-scorers with a 9.85. The team tied its season-best with a score of 49.325 against the Buckeyes in the fourth and final rotation, showing grit and determination to finish strong.
 
Penn State's stellar beam team comes in as its highest-ranked squad this year, and with plenty of outstanding scores already, the Nittany Lions seek even better performances in their second-straight road meet. 
 
FLOOR — No. 37
 
The team earned an outstanding 49.300 for the event led by Herring's score of 9.9. McElligott, Piedrahita and Alyssa Kramer each posted 9.875s to help the Nittany Lions bounce back in their third rotation against Ohio State.
 
All-Around
 
Johnston led Penn State's all-arounders with a 39.275. Piedrahita ended with a 39.225 and McElligott posted 39.200 in all four events on Saturday evening.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
 
Penn State will host the Big Five Meet in Rec Hall with session one on Friday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. and session two on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m. Penn State will compete in session two against Illinois, Iowa, Maryland and Michigan while the rest of the Big Ten squads will go in the first session.
