COLLEGE PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball is set to take on Maryland for the second time this season. The contest will take place in College Park, Md. on Sunday, Feb. 18 with tip time scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
The Lady Lions (16-9, 7-7 Big Ten) look to snap a four-game losing streak, with a recent loss to Illinois while Maryland (14-10, 6-7 Big Ten) looks to continue its momentum for its recent win over Illinois.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Lions dropped a home game to Illinois in their recent outing with a 86-71 final score.
  • Despite the loss, Senior+ guard Makenna Marisa played in her 135th game as a Lady Lion, the most by and player in school history.
  • Graduate guard Ashley Owusu notched a milestone of her own, surpassing 500 career assists.
  • Penn State had three players in double figures: Owusu (15), Marisa (14) and Brigham (10). 
  • Owusu has scored double digit points in all 10 of her games since making her Penn State debut.
  • Marisa's 14-point performance marked her 100th career double figure scoring outing.
  • The Lady Lions outrebounded the Fighting Illii by a 36-30 clip. 
  • Penn State totaled 30 bench points.

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa ranks 14th in the B1G in points per game and ninth in field goal percentage (47.7).
  • Shay Ciezki ranks third in the B1G and 21st nationally in made three-pointers with 65. Her 40.4 clip beyond the arc sits her fourth in the conference and 35th nationally and her 2.60 per game sits at fourth in the B1G and 28th in the country.
  • Leilani Kapinus is first in the B1G in steals with 55 and steals per game, grabbing 2.20 per game. She is also fifth in the conference in blocks per game with a 1.20 mark.
  • The Lady Lions are fourth in the country in three-point percentage and second in the B1G, shooting 39.3%. They also rank 12th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with 9.2. The team also has the sixth highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 85.4 points per game.
  • Penn State ranks seventh in the nation and third in the conference in field goal percentage (49.2).
  • The Lady Lions also rank second in the league in steals per game (9.9), second in blocked shots per game (4.2) and second in bench points per game (26.3).
  • Penn State's defense forces 19.56 turnovers per game which is second in the B1G and 39th in the nation.

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Ashley Owusu was named to the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (1/22) after averaging 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two of Penn State's B1G wins. She repeated on the list on 2/6 after averaging 17.5 points, eight rebounds and four assists in two games while tallying her 1,500th career point.
  • Shay Ciezki collected her first conference accolade of the season after totaling 62 points through three games including a personal best 27-point performance against Oklahoma State in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. The Buffalo native made the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on 11/27.
  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points). Marisa found herself on the honor roll again on 1/29 after surpassing 2,000 career points.
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten
  • preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS 

  • Maryland was an NCAA Elite 8 Team a season ago, making a run through the first and second rounds and defeating Notre Dame in the Sweet 16 to advance to the Elite 8. The Terrapins lost to no. 1 at the time South Carolina.
  • This season, Maryland started on a slide and have built back up to a 14-10 overall record and a 6-7 conference record. 
  • The Terrapins have Big Ten wins over Illinois, Rutgers, Purdue, Minnesota and Northwestern.
  • Shyanne Sellars leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game which sits at a ninth ranking in the conference. With 356 points this season she ranks 11th.
  • Jakia Brown-Turner and Bri McDaniels also average double figure scoring, both at a 13.0 clip.
  • Maryland ranks at the top of the conference at free throw attempts, drawing 21.08 trips to the line per game.

PENN STATE –MARYLAND SERIES

  • The Terrapins lead the all-time series 15-21.
  • Penn State won the most recent game earlier this season at the Bryce Jordan Center using a 112-76 final score. This was the Lady Lions first win over the Terrapins since 2003. Penn State also scored the second most points Maryland has allowed in school history. The Lady Lions notched 16 three pointers, shattering a record they broke earlier in this season.
  • The Lady Lions are 6-11 in games played in College Park and have not earned a victory there since Dec. 3, 2003.
