No. 7 Men’s Gymnastics to Compete at NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 7 ranked Penn State men's gymnastics team will compete at the 2024 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio April 19-20. 
 
The Men's Gymnastics Committee selected 12 teams, five all-around competitors and five individuals per event for the pre-qualifying sessions for the championships. The competitors that will advance to the finals will be the top-three teams and the top-three competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top-three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor.

Penn State will compete in the second session of Friday's qualifying round with No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Michigan, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 10 Air Force and No. 11 Springfield.

LAST TIME OUT
Michael Jaroh led the way for the Nittany Lions at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago in Champaign, Ill. The senior won the high bar title with a career high score of 14.325. He is just the fourth Nittany Lion to be named a Big Ten high bar champion and the first in over eight years. 
 
Jaroh also competed in the all-around the day before where he placed fifth. He joins teammate Josh Karnes who took third in the all-around and Michael Artlip who finished sixth in the event on the All-Big Ten first team.
 
Artlip took the bronze on floor in the individual event finals with a career high 14.325. 
 
As a team, Penn State finished with 404.050 points to take fifth. 

NITTANY LIONS BY EVENT
Floor
The Nittany Lions are ranked seventh in the nation with a season high team score of 68.600. The team has two gymnasts ranked in the top-15. 
 
Karnes is ranked sixth in the nation with a season and career high score of 14.500. He finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships with a score of 14.175. 
 
Artlip is ranked 11th with a season and career high score of 14.225. He took third at the conference championships. 
 
Pommel Horse
Penn State is ranked ninth in the nation with a team score of 66.800. 
 
Senior Michael Jaroh leads the team with a 14.700. Derek Schlagenhauf is next on team with a 13.800. 
 
Rings
The Nittany Lions are ranked sixth on rings with a team score of 71.200. 
 
Freshman Luke Esparo leads the Nittany Lions with a score of 14.450. Esparo won the event on four occasions during the regular season. 
 
Vault
Penn State is ranked eighth overall on vault with a team score of 72.100. 
 
Karnes leads Penn State on the event with a score of 14.650. Artlip owns the third highest score on the team with a 14.600.
 
Parallel Bars
Penn State is fifth in the nation on parallel bars with a 70.200. 
 
Karnes leads the team with his highest regular score of 14.900. He notched a 15.100 at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago. The Erie, Pa. native is ranked first in the nation in the event.
 
High Bar
The Nittany Lions are fourth in the nation on high bar with a 68.750. 
 
Karnes also leads the team on high bar with a score of 14.050. Following Karnes is Kacper Garnczarek with a 13.950.
 

MEETING HISTORY
Penn State has won the NCAA Championship on 12 occasions, tying Oklahoma as the most winningest teams in championship history. Current Penn State head coach Randy Jepson has won three titles, the most recent coming in 2007, earning a team score of 221.000. The Nittany Lions have 56 individual championships, the second most across all collegiate men's gymnastic programs. 
 
In 2023, Penn State finished sixth out of 12 teams with a score of 412.057.
