Senior tight end tied FBS record with 17 receptions; set PSU, B1G records with 224 yards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State senior tight end Tyler Warren collected multiple national weekly awards for his performance in No. 3/3 Penn State’s 33-30 overtime win at USC.

 

Warren was named National Player of the Week by the Associated Press, Maxwell Award, Mackey Award and Paul Hornung Award.

 

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and was a renowned sportswriter and football official.

 

The John Mackey Award is presented annually to the top tight end in college football.

 

The Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football.

 

Warren’s 32-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, after snapping the ball to begin the play, was the FWAA Pop-Tarts Play of the Week.

He was Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

  • Caught a career-high 17 passes for a career-best 224 yards and one touchdown against USC.
  • Set a Penn State and Big Ten tight end record with 224 receiving yards, while joining Northwestern’s Jon Harvey (208 vs. Michigan, 1982) as the only Big Ten tight ends to go over 200 receiving yards in a game.
  • His 17 receptions are a Penn State record and tie the FBS tight end record, set by New Mexico’s Emilio Vallez in 1967 and matched by Harvey in 1982.
  • Warren’s 224 receiving yards are the second-most by a Penn State player, trailing only Jahan Dotson’s 242 yards at Maryland in 2021.
  • Named William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist and is on the Mackey Award watch list.
  • Graduated in Fall 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising/public relations and is pursuing a second degree in telecommunications.
  • He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
  • Earned third-team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and honorable mention from the media in 2023.
  • He owns 89 receptions for 1,119 yards and 15 touchdowns, while adding three rushing scores and a passing touchdown at Penn State.
  • Warren has 16 career receptions of 20+ yards and three career 100-yard receiving games.
  • Warren’s 15 career touchdown receptions are good for 11th all-time at Penn State and tied for second among PSU tight ends with Mike Gesicki (15; 2014-17), trailing only Pat Freiermuth (16; 2018-20).
  • He has the most total touchdowns (18; 15 receiving, 3 rushing) all-time among Penn State tight ends.
  • He is third among PSU tight ends all-time with 89 career receptions and fifth with 1,119 career receiving yards.
  • He is one of three active FBS tight ends (only Big Ten tight end) with 85+ receptions, 1,100+ receiving yards and 15+ receiving touchdowns in his career.
  • In 2024, he has 40 receptions for 513 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Among FBS tight ends in 2024, Warren ranks third in receptions (40; 1st in B1G), second in receiving yards (513; 1st), second in receiving yards per game (85.5; 1st), third in receiving touchdowns (4; 1st), third in yards per reception (12.8; 1st), second in 100-yard receiving games (2; 1st), tied-first in 15+ yard receptions (16; 1st) and second in percentage of catches for first downs (68%; 1st) among TEs with 30+ catches.

 

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on Nov. 12, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled on Nov. 26. The formal presentation of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards on Friday, March 14 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.

 

The Mackey Award will reveal its eight semifinalists on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and its three finalists on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

 

The winners of the Maxwell and Mackey Awards will be announced live on the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN on Dec. 12, 2024.

 

The Paul Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission in honor of the late football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award Dinner in Louisville in March 2025.

 

No. 3/3 Penn State travels to Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on NBC.
