KICKIN’ IT
Penn State's historic selection to the 2024 NCAA Tournament Field solidified the Nittany Lions' place as one of the most prominent programs in the history of the sport, with PSU becoming the sixth program in Division I history to reach 30 NCAA Tournaments while being the second program ever to accomplish that feat with 30 consecutive bids. Only North Carolina has mustered a longer streak of NCAA Tournament appearances, with the Tar Heels attending all 43 since the governing body of collegiate athletics began recognizing women's soccer in 1982. The 2024 Nittany Lions enter the postseason boasting a 12-6-3 record against what was indisputably the most challenging schedule in the sport. Penn State finished ranked eighth in the NCAA's rating percentage index (RPI) and came away with the nation's top-ranked opponent success rate and No. 1 adjusted non-conference RPI.
PSU landed a quartet of Big Ten postseason accolades in the league office’s annual release, highlighted by PSU’s 31st-consecutive season with a First Team All-B1G choice. Redshirt senior forward Kaitlyn MacBean made history for PSU, landing First Team All-Big Ten accolades following a banner year as one of the most dangerous attacking players in the nation. MacBean was joined by a pair of Second Team All-Big Ten choices in senior midfielder Jordan Fusco and senior defender Mieke Schiemann, as well as Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree and graduate midfielder Devon Olive. The Nittany Lions are led by MacBean's 29 total points and 14 total goals this season, with the Excelsior, Minnesota, native also boasting one of the highest match-winning goal tallies in Division I with five. Fusco has been dominant in the passing game, crossing the double-digit threshold in assists in a single season at PSU for the first time since Penelope Hocking and Kate Wiesner accomplished that feat in 2022. Between the pipes, the Nittany Lions are led by redshirt sophomore Mackenzie Gress' 37 total saves.
THE STREAK
The Penn State women’s soccer program secured an at-large selection in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships on Monday evening, November 11, marking the 30th consecutive selection for the Nittany Lions since their inaugural appearance in 1995. Penn State has reached the NCAA Tournament in all but one year since its promotion to varsity status in the 1994 season. The Blue & White extended the second-longest national postseason streak in women’s college soccer following Monday evening’s release from the tournament’s selection committee. PSU became just the sixth team in NCAA Division I history (seventh including Notre Dame's selection later Monday night) to reach the 30-bid threshold. Penn State joins North Carolina (43), Virginia (36), Santa Clara (34), Stanford (33), UConn (32) and Notre Dame (30) in the 30-apperance club since the inaugural NCAA Tournament in 1982. The Nittany Lions are the second-fastest program to reach 30 bids all-time, surpassed only by North Carolina's first 30 appearances beginning with the first NCAA Tournament.
MEET THE FIELD
The 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament field boasts 64 programs comprised of 30 automatic qualifiers from all eligible women's soccer-sponsoring Division I conferences in addition to 34 at-large choices from across the country. Defending national champion Florida State garnered a No. 1 seed, while the Duke Blue Devils earned the national No. 1 overall seed. Big Ten rival USC and SEC challenger Mississippi State rounded out the remaining top seeds in their respective regions. In total, Penn State played 13 different NCAA Tournament teams over the course of the 2024 campaign, logging 15 matches against those opponents in that timespan. The Nittany Lions have battled against 20.3% of the NCAA Tournament field, with 71.4% of the program's matches played this year coming against tournament challengers.
Next Up: Stony Brook
STANDING UP TO STONY BROOK
Led by sixth-year head coach Tobias Bischof, the Stony Brook Seawolves arrive in Happy Valley for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament as the automatic qualifier representing the Coastal Athletic Association, with the program boasting a 14-3-3 record heading into the national postseason. Stony Brook went 7-1-2 in the CAA regular season, downing third-seeded Elon and top-seeded Monmouth en route to an NCAA auto bid. Penn State and Stony Brook have squared off against a single common opponent in the 2024 season in the Maryland Terrapins, with Penn State working for a 5-0 Big Ten Conference victory while Stony Brook picked up a 2-2 draw on opening weekend of the season. On an individual basis, the Seawolves are led on the pitch by junior forward Luciana Setteducate's 30 total points on team-leading goal (11) and assist (eight) tallies. Between the pipes, senior shot-stopper Nicolette Pasquarella has started all 20 matches with a 0.792 save percentage along with four solo shutouts.
STORY OF THE SERIES
Penn State and Stony Brook gear up for third all-time meeting of the two programs since the inaugural fixture in 2017, with all three contests coming in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament. Saturday's match will also serve as the second all-time meeting between PSU skipper Erica Dambach and Stony Brook head coach Tobias Bischof in the NCAA Tournament, with the head coach pairing last meeting during the 2019 opening round in Happy Valley. The first meeting of the two programs in 2017 remains tied for the largest NCAA Tournament margin of victory in PSU program history, with the 7-0 win in 2017 joining a 7-0 decision against Central Connecticut State in the opening round of the 2023 tournament. The Nittany Lions and Seawolves last met in the 2019 tournament, with Penn State picking up a 3-1 victory en route to a Sweet 16 appearance.
