LAS VEGAS - Penn State Women’s Tennis (7-1) earned a 4-3 victory against Big 12 opponent Colorado (6-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Freshman Jelena Vico sealed the victory with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Rixt Van Der Werff on court four.
Colorado took the doubles point. The pair of sophomore Jordina Cegarra and freshman Patricia Grigoras struck first with a 6-3 doubles victory on court two over Anya Nelson and Van Der Werff. On court one, No. 77 Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima dropped to Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec, 6-4, while senior Yvonne Zuffova and Vico fell to Mila Stanojevic and Lera Alexin, 7-5, on court three.
In singles, Grigoras earned a three-set win against Betina Tokac, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, to put the Nittany Lions on the board. Dorner, a junior, evened the score at two apiece with a 6-3, 7-6 victory on court one against Stanojevic. Penn State picked up its third singles win when Maria Daciana Ciubotaru took down Alexin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, at the six spot before Vico closed out the match with her win.
On court two, Uchijima dropped to El Sayed, 6-0, 6-2. At the five spot, Zuffova came up short against Rebec, 6-0, 6-2.
The Nittany Lions take on UNLV on Sunday at 1 p.m. from the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
