Baseball Ready For Three Game Weekend In Virginia

Nittany Lions take on Richmond on Friday, VCU on Saturday, William & Mary on Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – The Penn State baseball team travels to Virginia for three games this weekend. The Nittany Lions begin the weekend against Richmond on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Pitt Field. PSU takes on VCU on Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Diamond, home of the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. Penn State finishes the weekend on Sunday against William & Mary at 1 p.m. at Plumeri Park.

 

Friday and Saturday games will be broadcast on ESPN+. There is an audio-only feed on Sunday.

 

Penn State, led by head coach Mike Gambino, is 5-1 on the season after a three-game sweep at Longwood last weekend. PSU earned its first road sweep against a non-conference opponent since 2018 at Elon.

 

Richmond, coached by Mik Aoki, is 7-1 after winning two of three against Fairfield and picking up a 5-1 victory over NC State on Tuesday.

 

VCU, led by Sean Thompson, is 2-6 on the year. The Rams went 1-2 last weekend, falling in two games against No. 14 Clemson and bouncing back with a win over NC A&T and dropping a 9-4 decision at No. 5 North Carolina on Tuesday.

 

William & Mary, coached by Rob McCoy, is 4-4 on the season. The Tribe swept Marist last weekend but fell at George Mason on Tuesday.

KLING CLAIMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

  • Penn State junior outfielder Paxton Kling was tabbed Big Ten Player of the Week and Perfect Game National Player of the Week for his efforts in PSU’s sweep at Longwood.
  • Kling batted 7-of-13 (.538) at the plate with four homers, a double, six RBI and seven runs.
  • He notched a 1.538 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
  • Kling launched two homers, including a three-run shot, in Saturday’s first game. It was his first career multi-homer game.
  • Kling added a solo homer, a double and two runs in Saturday’s second game.
  • He led off Sunday’s contest with a homer and added two hits and two steals, while scoring three runs.
  • Kling ranks fifth in the nation in home runs (5), second in home runs per game (0.83), ninth in slugging percentage (1.080) and 18th in OPS (1.613).

 

NITTANY LIONS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN HOMERS

  • Through six games, Penn State has slugged 13 home runs.
  • The Nittany Lions rank fifth in the country, and lead the Big Ten, averaging 2.17 homers per game.
  • Penn State also ranks 18th in the nation in total home runs and 12th in slugging percentage (.579).
  • Paxton Kling leads the Nittany Lions with five homers, while sitting fifth in the country in total homers and second in home runs per game (0.83).
  • Kling is among eight Nittany Lions with at least one home run this season.
  • Ryan Weingartner owns two homers, while Jesse Jaconski, Joe Jaconski, Matt Maloney, Jack Porter and Cole Wagner each have one.

 

PENN STATE SWEEPS LONGWOOD

  • The Nittany Lions picked up a three-game sweep at Longwood last weekend.
  • Penn State won 11-1 in game one, 10-0 in game two and 15-7 in game three.
  • The Nittany Lions earned their first non-conference road sweep since Feb. 16-18, 2018 at Elon.
  • Penn State tallied 36 runs in the series, its most in a three-game series since scoring 39 against Michigan State in 2021.
  • PSU notched 10+ run in three-straight games for the first time since April 7-12, 2024 and recorded 10+ runs in each game of a three-game series for the first time since May 8-9, 2022 vs. Michigan State.
