MADISON, Wis. – Junior goaltender Arsenii Sergeev (Yaroslavl, Russia) set the Penn State single-season record for shutouts with his fourth of the season as Penn State blanked No. 19/20 Wisconsin, 2-0, in Big Ten Conference action at the Kohl Center on Friday evening.
The Nittany Lions snap a seven-game skid against the Badgers moving to 13-11-3 on the year and 4-10-3-1-1-2 in league play in the process while Wisconsin drops to 11-15-3 overall and 6-12-1-1-6-0 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring early in the first period as sophomore Reese Laubach (San Jose, Calif.) slipped a rebound into the back of the net after an Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) wrister snuck through the pads of Badger net-minder Tommy Scarfone for the 1-0 edge at the 3:10 mark.
- It was then Fink who would hit the empty net after Laubach won a battle along the boards to secure the 2-0 victory with just 45 ticks remaining in the contest.
GOALTENDING
- Sergeev moves to 10-6-3 on the year after stopping all 25 shots he faced.
- Along with setting the Penn State single-season record for shutouts with his fourth of the season he is now tied with Peyton Jones ’20 and Oskar Autio ’22 for the most all-time with four.
- For his career, Sergeev has five shutouts as he registered one during his two years at UConn.
- Scarfone falls to 10-11-3 after making 24 saves in the loss.

NOTES
- Penn State held the slim 26-25 edge in shots, however, the Nittany Lions used a 14-3 edge in the third period to flip the script and close the game out. Neither team converted on four powerplay chances each including one major powerplay each.
- Laubach’s first period goal is his 11th of the season which is a new career high and after adding an assist on Fink’s empty net goal, Laubach has a new career-best 23 points on the season after collecting his seventh multi-point effort of the year and the 12th of his career.
- With one goal and one assist, Fink secures his team-leading 11th multi-point game of the season and becomes just the fourth Nittany Lion all-time to reach the 20-goal mark, the first since Alex Limoges’ ’21 record-setting season of 2018-19 where he potted 23.
- Fink’s 39 points are now the eighth-most in a single season in program history and he is just one point shy of becoming just the eighth Nittany Lions in program history to hit the 40-point mark.
- Freshman JJ Wiebusch (Verona, Wis.) was held off the scoresheet in his Madison homecoming snapping his career-best five-game point streak.
- Penn State improves to a perfect 12-0-0 when leading after two periods and are now 11-4-1 when scoring first this season.
