Visiting Richmond Downs No. 19 Women’s Lacrosse in Season Opener

Late come-back push by the Blue and White Falls Short in Holuba Hall

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 19 Penn State women's lacrosse lost its season opening contest, 12-10, against the Richmond Spiders on Saturday afternoon in Holuba Hall. 

Penn State held an undefeated 11-0 all-time record against Richmond coming into Saturday’s matchup with their last meeting coming in 1998.  

  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Quarter 1 – Penn State 3, Richmond 1 

Penn state started off its first quarter of play in the 2025 season with three goals from a trio of players.  

Senior Erika Ho opened with the Nittany Lions’ first goal of the season, and Lauren Saltz scored the second goal of the game to start her senior campaign with an assist in front of the net by sophomore Kelly MacKinney. Senior Brooke Hoss scored the third goal of the quarter for Penn State. 

The Spiders scored their first goal of the season with 19 seconds remaining to close out the first quarter.  

 

Quarter 2 – Penn State 7, Richmond 4 

The Nittany Lions added on four goals to close out the first half of play with a 7-4 edge over Richmond.  

Ho notched a hat trick in the first half, the first of her collegiate career, while transfer Delaney Radin and freshman Ellie Wisch tacked on two more with their first goals in a Penn State uniform.  

Richmond added three goals to cut the Penn State lead back to three before the end of the half. 

  

Quarter 3 – Penn State 7, Richmond 11 

The Richmond defense came out swinging in the second half, holding the Nittany Lions scoreless for all 15 minutes while tallying seven goals on the offensive end. 

 

Quarter 4 – Penn State 10, Richmond 12 

The Spiders pushed their lead to four goals before Penn State got back on track with a score at the 8:05 mark in the fourth on the second goal from Wisch. The Nittany Lions found the net twice before the end of the quarter, but could not complete to comeback, dropping the contest, 12-10. 

 

GAME NOTES 

  • MacKinney is six points away from 50 in her career.
  • Hoss is now five goals away from reaching 75 across her career.
  • The defense collected 11 total turnovers and scooped up 25 groundballs.
