Women’s Tennis Travels to Rutgers and Maryland

The Nittany Lions head to Rutgers on Saturday, March 22 before squaring off against Maryland the following day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (11-3, 2-2 B1G) continues Big Ten play on the road with matches against Rutgers (7-5, 1-3 B1G) on Saturday, March 22 and Maryland (9-7, 2-2 B1G) the next day. Both matches are slated for a noon start. 

In Case You Missed it 

  • Penn State dropped matches to Michigan State, 4-2, and No. 5 Michigan, 4-1, over the weekend. 
  • Against the Spartans, the Nittany Lions took the doubles point with wins from Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima on court one and Jordina Cegarra and Patricia Grigoras on court two. Dorner and Uchijima defeated Ellie Blackford and Liisa Vehvilainen, 6-0. Cegarra and Grigoras took down Issey Purser and Oriana Parkins-Godwin, 7-6. 
  • The next day against the Wolverines, Yvonne Zuffova earned a court five singles victory over Jessica Bernales, 6-1, 6-1.  
  • Dorner battled No. 2 Julia Fliegner to a third set before the match went unfinished. The final score was 4-6, 6-3, 2-4. 

Scouting Report - Rutgers 

  • The Scarlet Knights enter with a 7-5 (1-3 B1G) record on the season having come off a winless weekend against Purdue and Indiana on the road. 
  • Rutgers’ lone conference win was a 4-3 victory over Oregon on March 7 in East Brunswick, New Jersey. 
  • Mai Nguyen competes on court one, holding a 6-4 (1-3 B1G) record at the top spot. 
  • She pairs with Naomi Karki for court one doubles. They have a 7-3 (2-2 B1G) record so far. 

Scouting Report - Maryland 

  • The Terrapins own a 9-7 (2-2 B1G) record on the season. They have split both of their conference play weekends with wins coming against Oregon on March 9 and Indiana on March 14. The team dropped to Washington and Purdue. 
  • Kallista Liu is 10-3 (2-1 B1G) on court one singles, leading Maryland in wins. Tamari Gagoshidze, playing on courts four and five, is not far behind with a record of 8-3 (1-2 B1G). 
  • Liu pairs with Ema Kocaevic on court one for doubles. The pair is 7-3 (0-2 B1G) on the season. 

Series History - Rutgers 

  • Penn State has dominated the all-time series between the two programs, boasting a 23-3 record against Rutgers. 
  • The Nittany Lions won last year’s contest, 4-3 in Happy Valley.
