Women’s Tennis Opens Big Ten Play at Home Against Indiana and Purdue

The match against Indiana is Friday, March 7 at noon with the Purdue match on Sunday at 10 a.m.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (9-1, 0-0 B1G) hosts Indiana (6-6, 0-2 B1G) on Friday, March 7 at noon and Purdue (7-2, 1-1 B1G) on Sunday at 10 a.m. to begin the Big Ten slate. Both matches will be held in the Indoor Tennis Center. 

Penn State is ranked No. 34 in the latest ITA rankings. The team is pushing toward its highest standing in the polls since April 2, 2013, when the Nittany Lions were ranked No. 33.   

In Case You Missed it 

  • Penn State picked up an important road victory over No. 48 Princeton, 4-2, on March 1.  
  • Patricia Grigoras earned her team-leading 14th singles win, eighth of the spring, over Yichen Zhao in a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court three. 
  • At the five spot, Zuffova took down Zhang 6-3, 6-4.  
  • Maria Daciana Ciubotaru clinched the match for the Blue & White against Anna Nguyen on court six in a three-set thriller. Ciubotaru rallied from dropping the first set to capture a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory. 

Scouting Report - Indiana 

  • The Hoosiers enter the weekend at 6-6 (0-2 B1G) with their two conference losses coming against Purdue, 4-2, and No. 7 Ohio State, 4-0.  
  • Nicole Teodescu competes on court one singles for Indiana. 
  • The Hoosiers have used two different doubles pairs on court one in conference play so far. Marina Fuduric and Magdal Swierczynska went against Ohio State while Fuduric team with Lara Schneider against the Boilermakers.  
  • Schneider on court two and Swierczynska on court six picked up singles wins against Purdue. 

Scouting Report - Purdue 

  • The Boilermakers come to Happy Valley with a 7-2 (1-1 B1G) record. In conference play, they defeated Indiana and fell to No. 7 Ohio State, 4-0. 
  • Purdue is ranked No. 65 in the ITA rankings. 
  • Carmen Gallardo Guevara plays on court one singles for Purdue. She beat Indiana’s Teodescu 6-0, 6-4. Gallardo Guevara competes alongside Tara Katarina Milic on court one doubles. The pair defeated Indiana’s Fuduric and Schneider, 6-4. 
  • Penn State and Purdue met at the UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational in the fall.  
  • In doubles, Dorner and Uchijima beat Gallardo Guevara and Milic while Zuffova and Grigoras defeated Ida Clement and Ashlie Wilson. The Boilermakers’ Ece Gencer and Juana Larranaga beat Kate Zink and Deanna Lasorda. 
  • In singles, Uchijima took down Gallardo Guevara and Grigroas defeated Juana Larranaga. Purdue’s Clement, Gencer, Wilson and Milic beat Zuffova, Cegarra, Zink and Lasorda, respectively. 

Series History - Indiana 

  • The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 31-10 against the Nittany Lions. 
  • Penn State took the most recent meeting, 4-1, in Bloomington, Indiana. 

Series History - Purdue 

  • The Boilermakers hold a 26-8 advantage in the all-time series against the Nittany Lions. 
  • Penn State’s last win in the series came in 2017, a 5-2 triumph in Happy Valley.
