UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team split its doubleheader with Indiana on Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Nittany Lions earned a 15-9 win in game one, but fell, 17-6, in game two. Penn State is 10-2 overall on the season as both teams opened their Big Ten schedules.
With its win in game one, the Nittany Lions started a season 10-1 for the first time since 1978 and had a nine-game win streak for the first time since 2000.
Penn State hit two grand slams in game one, marking the first time in program history with two grand slams in a game.
In game one, the Nittany Lions launched four homers, including grand slams by Bryce Molinaro (third inning) and Paxton Kling (fourth). Molinaro added a solo shot, while Jack Porter contributed a solo homer. Ryan DeSanto struck out a season-high nine batters.
In game two, Joe Jaconski collected two hits, including a two-run double, while Porter and Cole Wagner each had an RBI single.
The Nittany Lions conclude the series against Indiana on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on B1G+.

Game 1
Junior Ryan DeSanto got the start for the Nittany Lions, firing four innings. He tallied a season-high nine strikeouts, while allowing three runs on three hits and four walks. He had multiple strikeouts in each inning, including three in the second frame.
Ben DeMell tossed 2.1 innings, giving up three runs on two hits. He posted four strikeouts. Riley Weatherwax allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning. Mason Butash threw the final two innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
Gavin Seebold started on the mound for Indiana went 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits. He had two strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Rushing faced four batters, allowing all four to reach and eventually score. Ryan Kraft went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four. Brayton Thomas threw 1.1 scoreless frames and struck out three.
Penn State collected 15 runs on 13 hits. Bryce Molinaro launched two homers, including a grand slam, for five RBI and scored three times. Paxton Kling blasted a grand slam. Jack Porter tallied three hits, including a solo homer, three RBI and three runs. Cohl Mercado contributed two hits, an RBI and two runs. Cole Wagner had a double among two hits and scored twice.
The grand slams by Molinaro and Kling marked the first time Penn State has ever hit two grand slams in a game. Kling launched his second grand slam of the year and PSU’s fourth grand slam of the season.
The Hoosiers tallied nine runs on 11 hits. Devin Taylor had two hits, including a solo homer. T.J. Schuyler and Hogan Henny added homers, while Jake Hanley and Cooper Malamazian each had a two-run double.
Indiana got on the board in the top of the second. Leading off the inning, Schuyler lifted a 3-1 pitch to right, which carried over the wall for a solo homer. Indiana led 1-0.
The Nittany Lions tied the game in the bottom half. With one out, Porter blasted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left. The 390-foot homer evened the game at 1-1.
The Hoosiers answered in the top of the third. Andrew Wiggins was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Wiggins stole second before Korbyn Dickerson drew a four-pitch walk. A wild pitch put runners on second and third. A fly ball by Hanley landed in the left-center gap for a double to bring home both runners.
Penn State re-took the lead in the bottom of the third. Mercado led off the inning with a line-drive single. Ryan Weingartner followed with a single to left before a single by Joe Jaconski loaded the bases. Molinaro launched the first pitch he saw over the wall in center for a grand slam. Wagner followed with a double to right and advanced to third on a balk. Porter sent a single through the middle to plate Wagner. Two batters later, Jesse Jaconski lined a double to the wall in center to bring in Porter. Helped by Molinaro’s 410-foot slam, PSU led 7-3 through three.
The Nittany Lions exploded for seven runs in the fourth. With two outs, Molinaro reached on a walk before a single by Wagner. Porter’s third hit of the day resulted in an RBI single to drive in Molinaro. Nate Voss was hit by a pitch to load the bases before back-to-back walks by Jesse Jaconski and Mercado. After a pitching change, Kling launched a fly ball over the wall in center for PSU’s second grand slam of the day. The 415-foot shot put PSU ahead, 14-3.
Penn State added a run in the fifth on a solo homer to right-center by Molinaro. His 412-foot blast extended PSU’s lead to 15-3.
Indiana got four runs in the seventh, beginning with a solo homer to center by Taylor. After walks by Hogan Denny and Hanley, a double by Malamazian brought in both runners. Tyler Cerny followed with a double to center to bring in Malamazian. PSU led 15-7.
The Hoosiers added two runs in the eighth. Dickerson started the frame with a single to left. Denny lifted a fly ball to center, which carried over the wall for a two-run homer. The Nittany Lions’ lead was trimmed to 15-9.
Game 2
Sophomore Mason Horwat earned the start for the Nittany Lions going two-thirds of an inning. He gave up four runs on four hits and two walks. Harrison Lollin went two innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one.
Matthew VanOstenbridge threw 1.1 frames, giving up two runs on three hits and recording one strikeout. Skip Shenosky went one inning, allowing four runs on five hits. Will Andrews threw one inning, giving up a run and a hit. Connor Throneberry went 1.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out three before Brandon Wingenroth finished the eighth.
Ben Grable got the start for the Hoosiers, tossing five innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Grable registered four strikeouts and a walk. Caleb Koskie threw one inning, giving up two runs on one hit. Pete Haas closed out the game going two innings, allowing three unearned runs.
Penn State recorded six runs on six hits. Joe Jaconski had two hits, including a two-run double, and scored twice. Jack Porter and Cole Wagner added RBI singles.
The Hoosiers notched 17 runs on 22 hits. Cooper Malamazian had four doubles, while driving in three runs and scoring three times. Jake Stadler had two hits, including a three-run homer, and four RBI. Korbyn Dickerson added a two-run homer and three RBI. Tyler Cerny drove in three runs with three hits, while Jake Hanley tallied three hits and a four runs.
Indiana plated four runs in the top of the first. Andrew Wiggins reached on an infield single to leadoff the game. Devin Taylor singled to left to put runners on first and third. A groundout by Dickerson allowed Wiggins to score. Joey Brenczewski followed with a single through the left side to bring in Taylor. A walk by Hanley and an infield single by T.J. Schuyler loaded the bases. Malamazian was hit by a pitch to allow Brenczewski to cross the plate. A fielder’s choice by Cerny resulted in Hanley scoring. Indiana led 4-0.
The Nittany Lions got a run in the bottom half. Ryan Weingartner worked a one-out walk. A single through the right side by Joe Jaconski put runners on the corners. Bryce Molinaro chopped a grounder to the left side for a fielder’s choice to bring in Weingartner. PSU trimmed its deficit to 4-1.
Indiana added on in the third. Schuyler started the inning with a single through the middle. Malamazian shot a grounder down the left line for a double. A groundout by Will Moore brought home pinch-runner Cole Decker. A double to left by Andrew Wiggins drove in Malamazian to extend IU’s lead to 6-1.
The Hoosiers plated two runs in the fourth. Hanley reached on a one-out single. Two batters later, Malamazian lined a double to right-center as Hanley hustled home. Cerny followed with a single to left to bring in Malamazian. Indiana led 8-1.
Indiana added four runs in the fifth. With one out, Taylor singled to left before Dickerson lifted a fly ball over the wall in right for a two-run homer. Two batters later, Hanley doubled down the left-field line. A single by Stadler drove in Hanley. Malamazian followed with a double off the wall in left to bring in Stadler. The Hoosiers pushed their lead to 12-1.
The Hoosiers scored a run in the sixth. After Wiggins was hit by a pitch and Taylor doubled to put runners on second and third, a sac fly to right by Hogan Denny brought in Wiggins. Indiana led 13-1.
Penn State plated two runs in the sixth. Weingartner was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a wild pitch. Joe Jaconski drew a walk to put two runners on. A groundout moved the runners to second and third and an infield single by Wagner drove in Weingartner. Porter lifted a sac fly to right to bring in Jaconski. PSU trailed 13-3.
Penn State added three runs in the seventh. Jesse Jaconski started the inning with a single to left. A fly ball by Paxton Kling was misplayed in right field to put runners on second and third. Joe Jaconski sent a double to the wall in center to bring in two runs. A grounder by Molinaro found its way through the infield to bring home Joe Jaconski. PSU cut its deficit to 13-6.
Indiana responded with four runs in the eighth. With two outs, Stadler sent a fly ball over the wall in right for a three-run homer. After a double by Malamazian, Cerny singled through the middle to drive in Malamazian. Indiana led 17-6.
