UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (10-1, 1-0 B1G) started Big Ten play with a 4-0 sweep of Indiana (6-7, 0-3 B1G) on Friday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center.
Penn State secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima took down Lara Schneider and Nicole Teodosescu 6-2 at the top spot. Yvonne Zuffova and Jelena Vico paired for a 6-4 court three victory against Elisabeth Dunac and Magdal Swierczynska.
On court two, Jordina Cegarra and Patricia Grigoras fell to Li Hsin Lin and Nicole Sifuentes in a hard-fought 7-5 match.
Grigoras, a freshman, made a statement in the first Big Ten singles match of her career. She earned a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over Marina Fuduric on court three. At the two spot, Uchijima earned a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 win against Teodosescu. Zuffova clinched the match for Penn State with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Sifuentes on court five.
On court one, Dorner and Schneider had an intense match. It went unfinished at 6-7, 6-3. Vico and Lin’s match on court four went unfinished at 6-3, 6-7, 4-4. Maria Daciana Ciubotaru and Elisabeth Dunac did not start before the match concluded.
The Nittany Lions wrap up their Big Ten opening weekend against Purdue on Sunday, March 9. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the Indoor Tennis Center.
