DURHAM, N.C. – The Nittany Lions wrapped up competition at the Duke Invitational on Saturday, April 12 in Durham, N.C. with strong outings from both the men’s and women’s track and field teams.
TOP PERFORMANCES
Maddie Pitts and Maddie Soderqvist competed in the first heptathlons for Penn State so far this outdoor season.
Pitts set a new PR in the 100-meter hurdles after she finished at a time of 13.56 to become the new No. 7 mark in program history. In the 200-meter race, Pitts finished first overall with a time of 23.78 on day one. On day two, Pitts placed first in the 800-meter race after she clocked in at 2:13.62. Overall, Pitts compiled a total score of 5184, which ranked third overall in Group A.
Soderqvist finished her first heptathlon of the outdoor season with a total score of 4845 to place second in Group B. Soderqvist also recorded several PRs. In the 100-meter hurdles, she set a PR of 14.74 to place second, placed eighth in the high jump with a 1.54m (5-1/2) PR and placed first with a throw of 12.20m (40-1/2) in shot put to set a new PR.
On day two, Isaac Osifo placed second with a 2.06m (6-9) in the men’s high jump. Robert Allen finished fifth in the high jump, recording a 2.01m (6-7) jump.
Day three saw Alexandria North record a PR in the women’s 400-meter race after she placed 13th overall at a time of 54.82.
DAY ONE
Heptathlon — Maddie Pitts (Group A)
- 100-meter hurdles: finished first at a time of 13.56 to set a new PR and take the No. 7 spot in program history
- High jump: finished eighth with a 1.63m (5-4 ¼) jump
- Shot Put: finished fourth, recording a 12.53m (41-1 ½) throw
- 200-meter: finished first with a time of 23.78
Heptathlon — Maddie Soderqvist (Group B)
- 100-meter hurdles: placed third overall at a time of 14.74 to set a PR
- High Jump: placed eighth with a 1.54m (5-½) jump to set a new PR
- Shot Put: placed first with a throw of 12.20m (40-½) to set a new PR
- 200-meter: placed sixth at a time of 26.39 to set a PR
DAY TWO
Heptathlon — Maddie Pitts (Group A)
- Long Jump: placed third with a 5.71m (18-8 ¾) jump
- 800-meter: placed first with a time of 2:13.62
- Total score: 5184 to place third overall
Heptathlon — Maddie Soderqvist (Group B)
- Long Jump: placed first with a 5.66m (18-7) jump
- Javelin: placed fourth with a 29.75m (97-7) throw
- 800-meter: placed fourth at a time of 2:33.68
- Total score: 4845 to place second overall
FIELD EVENT SUMMARY
Women’s High Jump
- Gwen Cudmore placed eighth for Group A with a 1.61m (5-3 ¼) jump
- Jenna Young finished in third place for Group B with a 1.61m (5-3 ¼) jump
- Morgan Casey placed seventh for Group B with a 1.56m (5-1 ¼) jump
Men’s High Jump
- Osifo placed second, recording a 2.06m (6-9) jump for Group A
- Allen placed fifth, recording a 2.01m (6-7) jump for Group A
Men’s Long Jump
- Joe White tied for 10th overall with a 6.92m (22-8 ½) jump

Women’s 400-meter
- North placed 13th overall at a time of 54.82 to set a new PR
- Mimi Duffy placed 35th overall with a time of 56.80
- Harriett Healey placed 42nd overall with a time of 57.42
Women’s 400-meter Hurdles
- Addyson White placed 17th with a time of 1:01.50
Women’s 4x100 Relay
- Penn State placed seventh at a time of 46.81
Men’s 400-meter
- Joshua Stolarski placed 17th overall with a time of 47.99
Men’s 400-meter Hurdles
- Matt Dematteo placed eighth at a time of 52.54
FIELD EVENT SUMMARY
Women’s Pole Vault
- Victoria Atkinson recorded 3.87m (12-8 ¼) to place fifth overall
Men’s Pole Vault
- Breckin Swope recorded 4.65m (15-3) to place third overall
- Tristan McGarrah recorded 4.97m (16-3 ½) to place sixth for Group A
