Track and Field Teams Complete Split-Squad Weekend at Bison Outdoor Classic

Men’s and women’s track teams set 12 personal records over the weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Penn State men’s and women’s track and field teams rounded out a strong split-squad weekend at Bucknell’s Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday and Sunday.  

TOP PERFORMANCES  

The women’s 1500-meter race saw a pair of PRs set by Claire Zubey and Katie Dallas. Freshman Zubey, running the first 1500-meter race of her collegiate career, finished 12th overall to set a PR time of 4:28.9. Dallas ended the 1500-meter race behind Zubey at a time of 4:29.08 to set a PR.  

Another pair of PRs were set during the men’s 1500-meter race. Christopher DeSousa finished in fifth place to set a PR of 3:46.54. Jake Borgesi, competing in the first outdoor race of his collegiate career, set a PR of 3:51.82 to finish 16th overall. 

Three Nittany Lions set PRs and finished in the top 10 In the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Justin Healey and Ryan Watson placed second and third, respectively. Healey completed the race in a time of 8:56.77 and Watson finished at a time of 8:59.82. Logan Strawser rounded out the top ten with an eighth-place finish at a time of 9:11.25.  

Audrey Friedman topped her PR in the javelin, placing second with a 49m (160-9) throw to set a new PR and take the No. 10 spot in program history.  

Freshman sprinter Jake Palermo completed the first 200-meter race of his collegiate career by finishing in first place with a time of 21.21. James Onwuka rounded out the top 10 for Penn State with a 10th place finish, clocking in at 21.61 and setting a new PR.  

DAY ONE 

TRACK EVENTS 

Women’s 800-meter 

  • Ashley Pines finished 46th overall with a time of 2:16.82.  

Women’s 1500-meter 

Women’s 1500-meter Invite 

  • Zubey placed 12th at a time of 4:28.91 to set a PR. 
  • Dallas placed 13th at a time of 4:29.08 to set a PR. 

Women’s 5K Invite 

Men’s 1500-meter Invite 

  • DeSousa finished in fifth place to set a new PR of 3:46.54. 
  • Borgesi placed 16th overall to set a new PR of 3:51.82. 
  • Jacob Smith placed 25th overall at a time of 3:53.16.  

Men’s 3K Steeplechase  

  • Healey placed second after finishing the race in 8:56.77 to set a new PR. 
  • Watson finished behind Healey in 8:59.82 to set a PR. 
  • Strawser finished in eighth place at a time of 9:11.25 to set a PR. 

Men’s 10K Invite 

  • Brendan Flynn finished 28th overall at a time of 30:17.21.  

DAY TWO  

TRACK EVENT SUMMARY 

 Men’s 100-meter: 

  • Coffi placed 25th overall to set a new PR of 10.85. 
  • Onwuka ran a 10.90 to tie for 30th overall in his first collegiate 100-meter race and set a new PR. 

Men’s 200-meter  

  • Palermo finished in first place with a time of 21.21 to set a PR. 
  • Onwuka finished in 10th place at a time of 21.61 to set a new PR. 

FIELD EVENT SUMMARY   

Women’s Javelin 

  • Friedman finished second overall with a 49m (160-9) throw to take the No. 7 spot on the all-time list.  

UP NEXT 

The Penn State track and field teams will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the Virginia Challenge beginning on Friday, April 18.
