Baseball Sweeps Fall Doubleheader Against Villanova

Mercado drives in two runs in game one; Yaucher with multiple extra-base hits in game two

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team swept its Fall doubleheader against Villanova on Friday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Nittany Lions earned a 7-5 win in game one and a 5-4 victory in game two.

 

The Nittany Lions continue their Fall Ball schedule on Friday, Oct. 10 when they host Team Ontario. Penn State concludes its Fall slate on Friday, Oct. 17 against Bucknell.

How It Happened - Game 1

PSU 3, NOVA 0, Through 2nd - A single by Spencer Barnett and walks by Michael Anderson and Nate Voss loaded the bases. A sac fly to center by Justin Turcovski brought home Barnett. A walk by Maddox McDonald re-loaded the bases. Cohl Mercado sent a single through the middle, allowing Anderson to score before Voss crossed the plate on a throwing error.

 

PSU 4, NOVA 0, Through 3rd - Bryce Molinaro lined a one-out double off the wall in right-center. After getting a strong jump off of second, Molinaro scored on a grounder by Kevin Karstetter.

 

PSU 4, NOVA 4, Through 4th - Mark Gialluisi worked a walk before scoring on a bases-loaded walk. Michael Whooley lined a double to left-center before a two-run single by Jojo Montgomery brought home Whooley and Brayden Leonard. A sac fly by Patrick Illitch allowed Colin Quintano to cross the plate.

 

PSU 6, NOVA 5, Through 5th - After Jack Roventini doubled to right-center, he scored on a single by Gialluisi. Villanova led 5-4.

 

McDonald led off the inning with a double to left. Mercado followed with a triple to the wall in right to bring in McDonald. Two batters later, Molinaro ripped a single into left to drive in Mercado.

 

PSU 7, NOVA 5, Through 6th - After reaching base to leadoff the inning, Joey DeMucci scored on an RBI single by McDonald.

How It Happened - Game 2

PSU 2, NOVA 0, Through 2nd - Preston Yaucher led off the frame with a triple to the wall in center. A grounder by Jayden Davis allowed Yaucher to score. Michael Anderson worked a walk before Avery Smith sent a double to the wall in right as Anderson hustled home.

 

PSU 2, NOVA 3, Through 3rd - After reaching on a leadoff walk, Patrick Illitch scored on a fielder’s choice by Austin Lemon. A double to right-center by Mark Gialluisi drove in Lemon and Tim Schuler.

 

PSU 2, NOVA 4, Through 4th - An RBI groundout by Trent Toole allowed Jojo Montgomery to cross the plate.

 

PSU 5, NOVA 4, Through 6th - Jack Messina started the inning with a double to the gap in right-center. Messina moved up to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sac fly by Maddox McDonald. Jack Porter worked a walk before Yaucher sent a double to the corner in left to drive in Porter. Yaucher stole third and then scored on balk.
