Penn State Women’s Ice Hockey Adds Six on Signing Day

The Nittany Lions signed six newcomers set to join them in the fall of 2026.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s ice hockey has announced its finalized recruiting class on Tuesday morning, signing six skaters set to join the team in the fall of 2026.

Penn State’s group of newcomers join the Nittany Lions from both the United States and Canada. The group is offensively heavy with four forwards, one defender, and one goaltender. Five hail from the United States, while one, Sofia Ismael, joins the Nittany Lions from Canada where she plays the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins in the OWHL . Current Nittany Lion Mya Vaslet is a product of Etobicoke. Two signees, Kylie Amelkovich and Morgan Stickney attend hockey powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary’s, joining Sophie Morrow as Shattuck alums to join the Nittany Lions. Lorelai Nelson comes to Happy Valley from Edina High School in Minnesota, following in the footsteps of Maddy Christian and Katelyn Roberts, who played for their respective high schools in the MSHSL. Megan Hosman joins the Nittany Lions from the Loomis Chaffee School while also playing for Mid-Fairfield U-19 and Kayla McCarthy plays for the Pittburgh Penguins Elite U19.

The Class

Sofia Ismael will come to Happy Valley after a successful U18 career, having won the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship with Hockey Canada, scoring four points. She also went to the U18 Women’s Canadian National Championships with Ontario Red in 2024 and 2025. She goes into her final season in the OWHL with 87 points in 81 GP.

Kylie Amelkovich joins the Nittany Lions with over 200 games played at Shattuck St. Mary’s, scoring 161 points heading into her senior season. She was recently selected to the USA roster for the 2026 IIHF U18 United States World Championships after being an Assistant Captain in the 2025 U18 August series and winning Silver at last year’s U18 World Championships, scoring five points. The forward is also coming off a 2024 U19 National Championship with Shattuck St. Mary’s.

PSU welcomes Kayla McCarthy from Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U19. She put up 35 points on 26 goals and nine assists in the 2024-25 season with Pittsburgh while serving as their Assistant Captain before earning the ‘C’ for the next season. She is also a two-time Bronze Medalist at the USA Hockey National Championships.

Lorelai Nelson will join PSU after captaining Edina High School this winter where she enters her senior season with 136 points in 121 games played. She is a 2024 Minnesota High School Hockey state champion while being named to the Minnesota State High School All-Tournament team twice. The forward was also invited to the 2024 USA Hockey U18 August series.

Megan Hosman is the lone defender in the class, coming to Penn State after captaining Loomis Chaffee School and  Mid-Fairfield U19. She had a very successful 2025 season, being named New England Hockey Journal Defender of the Year and earning All-NEPSAC honors. Hosman was also named Loomis’ Junior Female Athlete of the Year in 2025. Prior to 2025, she was a 2023 National Champion with Mid-Fairfield.

Goaltender Morgan Stickney will come to Penn State with two U18 IIHF World Championship records with USA Hockey under her belt. In 2025, while winning a Silver Medal, she became the first goalie ever to record three shutouts through the preliminary round with a 183:01 shutout streak and the first goalie to record an assist in the event’s history. She also led the tournament in save percentage (.957) and goals against average (.67) in 6 games played. Stickney was recently selected to return for the 2026 U18 IIHF World Championship with USA Hockey. She is also a 2024 U16 National Champion with Shattuck St. Mary’s.
