UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. Penn State men’s (No. 7) and women’s (No. 10) fencing teams completed the second day of the Elite Invitational in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, November 9. The Nittany Lions competed against ranked opponents No. 1 / 2 Notre Dame and No. 5 Northwestern in team matches.
CLEVELAND STATE
In the first match of the day, both the men’s and women’s teams won over Cleveland State. The men won the match 23-4 and the women won 17-10.
Men’s foil went undefeated, 9-0, in their bouts against Cleveland State. Spencer Burke, Alessio Fukuda and Julian Chin went undefeated, with additional victories coming from Matthew Gonzalez and Dusan Zeljkovic.
In men’s epee, the Nittany Lions won 6-3. Sebastian Bonomo, Zachary Suico, Sultan Hassan, Vasil Ivakimov and Mohamed Yasseen all earned victories, with Suico earning two.
Men’s saber kept the momentum strong for the Nittany Lions, winning the match 8-1. Neil Lilov and Carlos Fernando Chacon went undefeated, 3-0, in their bouts with freshman Tyson Deck going 2-1.
On the women’s side, foil won over Cleveland 7-2. Both Eden De La Cruz and Clarisse Tan went 3-0 with an additional victory from Thea Fernandes.
Women’s epee fell to Cleveland, 5-4, but saw strong performances from Yuna Tamura and Lena Gyenes, who each went 2-1.
For women’s saber, they won their match 6-3. Amelia Baker, Eve Scott and Mia Novick each went 2-1 to propel Penn State to win against Cleveland.
NO. 1 / 2 NOTRE DAME
The Nittany Lions lost their matches against No. 1 / 2 Notre Dame, with the men and women falling 20-7 and 23-4, respectively.
Men’s foil lost 8-1 in their bouts against Notre Dame with Burke earning a victory.
In men’s epee, Ivakimov went 2-1 in his bouts with an additional victory from Yasseen in their 6-3 loss.
In a 6-3 loss in the men’s saber, Lilov went 2-1 on the strip with another victory from Chacon.
Both women’s foil and epee lost 0-9 against Notre Dame.
Although women’s saber lost 5-4, they kept a tight match against Notre Dame. Kim went undefeated, 3-0, against the No. 1 women’s team in the country. Scott earned the additional victory for Penn State.
NO. 5 NORTHWESTERN
The Penn State women’s team lost in its competition against No. 5 Northwestern, 21-6.
De La Cruz earned the only victory for the women’s foil in an 8-1 loss. Allegra Cristofoletto went 2-1 in women’s epee in the Nittany Lions’ 7-2 loss to Northwestern.
Kim went undefeated in women’s saber for the second time on the last day of the competition against the No. 5 women’s team in the country, finishing with a 6-0 record on the last day of the Elite Invitational.
WAYNE STATE
In the last set of matches, Penn State took a dominant 21-6 victory over Wayne State to close out the competition in Columbus.
Men’s foil went undefeated for the second time on the last day of the competition, going 9-0 over Wayne State. Fukuda, Chin and Gonzalez all went 3-0 in foil.
In men’s epee, they won a tight 5-4 match against Wayne State. Hassan and Suico both went 2-1 with another victory from Bonomo to seal the match.
Lilov went undefeated, 3-0, as Chacon and Deck each went 2-1 as men’s saber won 7-2 over Wayne State.
