Two Nittany Lions Claim Event Titles; Five Others Post Podium Finishes at Day Two of the West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Penn State men’s gymnastics rounded out the 2026 West Point Open with seven total podium finishes, including two even titles. Penn State alumnus Michael Artlip even showed out, scoring a 13.150 on floor and a 13.000 on parallel bars, both good for second-place finishes.

Kellen Ryan was the first Nittany Lion to post an event title, putting up a 13.400 on floor. The graduate student also finished second on vault with a 13.800. His rings score of 12.450 missed the podium but was good for seventh place overall.

Luke Esparo was the other Penn Stater to take home a championship, posting a big 13.900 on rings. He also competed in the parallel bars for the Blue & White. Esparo narrowly missed the podium there, finishing fourth with a 12.750.

In his first collegiate individual finals, Shaun Smith made his spins count, grabbing a bronze medal on the vault, sharing the podium with Ryan. He just missed a floor honor as well, posting a 12.850, good for fourth.

Landon Simpson wrapped up third on the parallel bars with his 12.800 routine. He also scores a 13.150 on pommel horse to finish sixth.

Matt Underhill tied for second on the rings with fellow teammate Akseli Karsikas, both scoring a 13.000. Underhill also took a fifth on the floor with a 12.600, while Karsikas finished sixth on the parallel bars with a 12.300.

Kacper Garnczarek posted a pair of seventh-place finishes in the pommel horse and high bar. Freshman Brayden Erickson finished fifth on the vault with a 13.550, and fellow rookie Eliran Ioscovich posted a 10.400 on parallel bars for eighth place.

 

UP NEXT

Penn State is back on the road next weekend when the team travels to Sarasota, Florida, to compete at the Sam Mikulak Invitational. PSU will see foes from Big Ten opponent Illinois, Army, Evo Gymnastics, and other local clubs. Competition begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24.
