Distance relay team rewrites school record, Fitzgerald joins record book in 500-meter

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State completed its final two indoor events before the Big Ten Championships as the Nittany Lions hosted the Penn State Tune-Up and participated in the Philadelphia Metro on Friday.

The men’s distance medley relay team shattered the Penn State record at the Philadelphia Metro, finishing the event in 9:18:58. Allon Clay, Handal Roban, Niko Schultz and Nick Sloff broke the previous record by over eight seconds.

Staying in Philadelphia, Carter Fitzgerald also took the top spot in the men’s 500-meter with a 1:01.97, moving into second all-time in program history.

EVENT SUMMARY

Women’s weight throw began the day at the Penn State Tune-Up, with Penn State earning the top three places. Alex Pancoast paced the field with a 65-9.50 (20.05m), Gabby Cope took second with a 61-11.50 (18.88m) and Gabi Deglau set a personal-best mark with a third-place 59-5.50 (18.12m).

In the men’s weight throw, Collin Burkhardt delivered another impressive performance, nearly breaking his personal record and topping the event at 69-3.50 (21.12m). His fellow Nittany Lion Sam Engebretson finished third at 62-11.50 (19.19m).

The men’s pole vault saw Nittany Lions take the top two spots. Tristan McGarrah claimed the event with a 16-10.75 (5.15m) and Mason Bucks took second at 16-0.75 (4.90m). In the women’s pole vault, Amelia McBain’s 12-3.50 (3.75m) claimed first.

The high jump competitions saw several Nittany Lions with high finishes. Trip Campbell won the men’s competition with a 6-11.0 (2.11m) and Robert Allen set a personal-best mark with a 6-9.75 (2.08m). In the women’s competition, Hannah Riolo took second at 5-7.0 (1.70) on a tiebreaker over teammate Gwen Cudmore.

Other notable performances by Nittany Lions included Joe White, who took second in men’s long jump at 22-8.5 (6.92m), and Addyson White, who took the women’s 60-meter hurdles at 8.79 and finished second in the women’s 60-meter with a 7.50.

On the track, Claire Zubey took the women’s mile for Penn State with a 4:49.15, while Eva Kynaston set a new personal-best time of 4:51.57, finishing in fourth.

The final track event in the Penn State Tune-Up was the 3K and it ended with Tyler Radar’s personal-best 8:18.11 outpacing the field for a first-place finish.

Moving back to the Philadelphia Metro, a trio of Nittany Lions competed in the men’s mile. Jacob Smith finished in second with a personal-record time of 4:06.05, while Justin Healey took fourth in 4:07.89. Jake Borgesi completed the trio, placing sixth in the 23-man field at 4:12.70.
