Nittany Lions Drop B1G Opener at No. 18 Oregon

Penn State continues conference-opening weekend series in Eugene on Saturday at 7 p.m. (ET)

EUGENE, Ore. – The Penn State softball team dropped an 8-2 decision to the No. 18 Oregon Ducks on Friday evening from Jane Sanders Stadium in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.

Junior second baseman Michela Barbanente highlighted the Nittany Lion offense on Friday evening, with the third-year starter finishing the night 1-for-2 with a run scored and RBI on a solo home run in addition to a walk and stolen base. In the top of the fourth inning, the Itasca, Illinois, native cut into the Oregon lead with her second homer of the 2026 campaign in addition to the 14th of her collegiate career. Barbanente continues to lead the Blue & White in walks drawn this season, securing her 22nd base on balls in addition to booking her team-high-tying ninth stolen base of the campaign.

Elsewhere in the lineup, sophomore center fielder Natalie Lieto crushed her fifth home run of the 2026 season in addition to her 12th since joining the Nittany Lions a year ago. The Monroe, Connecticut, native finished the night 1-for-3 with a run and RBI to her credit following the solo blast in the top of the fifth. Lieto also managed to match her longest reached-base streak of the season following her performance on Friday in Oregon, extending her streak to seven games following the result.

In the circle, Penn State called on junior right-handed pitcher Bridget Nemeth to start the series opener, mustering her team-high 14th appearance of the year in addition to a team-high-tying eight starts. Nemeth logged 3.0 innings of effort, and junior righty McKenna Young entered for 3.0 frames of relief in her 12th appearance of the campaign. Behind the pair of pitchers, Penn State’s defense played its 12th error-free game of the season, with freshman first baseman Gabby Gradishar leading the Nittany Lions in putouts with six on the evening.

The Blue & White did not find their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, and the Ducks made PSU pay with a three-run home half of the first that included a two-run home run and an RBI single. Following a quiet second inning for both squads, Oregon tacked on two more tallies in the bottom of the third frame with a pair of solo shots. Seeking a response, Penn State was able to answer back with a bomb of its own in the form of a solo blast from Barbanente in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-1 Oregon lead through three and a half innings of work.

Oregon responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with the Ducks bashing a pair of long balls in the frame to make it an 8-1 advantage. With two outs on the board in the visitor’s half of the fifth, Lieto worked a 1-1 count before walloping a solo shot over the fence in left field to cut into the Nittany Lion deficit. Penn State’s defense worked well behind Young to secure a one-two-three frame in the home half, but the Blue & White still faced a six-run deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth. Despite facing a bases-loaded situation with only one, Young and the Nittany Lions were able to keep the board clean in the home half of the inning. Unfortunately, PSU was unable to register a late rally, culminating in the 8-2 final score.

Penn State participated in its second-ever game in the state of Oregon and second matchup in the Beaver State over the last three days on Friday night. The Blue & White moved to 19-7 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten Conference competition, while the 18th-ranked Ducks climbed to 19-7 and 1-0 in Big Ten play. In the all-time series between the two programs, Oregon picked up its seventh victory in as many opportunities, with Penn State looking to respond on Saturday and Sunday as Big Ten play continues from Eugene.
