UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women’s tennis returns home for the final weekend of the regular season as it takes on No. 22 Washington and Oregon at the Sarni Tennis Center. The program will honor Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima during Senior Day presented by the Penn State Alumni Association against Oregon. 

The Nittany Lions (13-9, 4-7 Big Ten) will face the Huskies (17-3, 8-3 Big Ten) at 4 p.m. on Friday before matching up with the Ducks (12-11, 3-8 Big Ten) at 11 a.m. on Sunday.  

PSU enters the final weekend of the regular season ranked No. 56 in the ITA poll. Dorner and Maelie Monfils rejoined the ITA doubles rankings at No. 89 after picking up two ranked wins last weekend. The pair is 8-3 this spring with five of those victories coming against ranked opponents. Counting the fall, they have six ranked wins. 

 

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: OLIVIA DORNER

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: OLIVIA DORNER

  • Dorner will depart Penn State as one of the winningest Nittany Lions in program history. Against Michigan State, she eclipsed the 100-win mark for her career and enters the weekend with 108 victories, 51 singles and 57 doubles.
  • Dorner was an All-Big Ten Second Team and Academic All-Big Ten selection a season ago. She has also been chosen to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-Region team.
  • The Williamsport, Pennsylvania native has been a ranked doubles competitor the past three seasons of her career with three different partners.  
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: MAIKO UCHIJIMA

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: MAIKO UCHIJIMA

  • Uchijima joined the program after two years at Temple. In two seasons with the Nittany Lions, she has totaled 26 singles and 44 doubles victories. For her career, she has 59 singles and 83 doubles, which is the most on the team.
  • Uchijima reached the NCAA Doubles Championships three times in her career, including once at Penn State alongside Dorner after winning the ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Championship. She has been ranked in doubles all four years of her career.
  • The Tokyo, Japan native is a two-time Big Ten Player of the WeekCollege Sports Communicators Academic All-Region team selection and an ITA Scholar-Athlete. 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT 

  • Penn State split its road trip at Indiana and Purdue last weekend with the Nittany Lions falling, 4-3, to the Hoosiers before responding with a 4-0 sweep against Purdue. 
  • Dorner and Monfils both put together 3-0 weekends. In doubles, the duo defeated Indiana’s No. 84 Alessandra Teodosescu and Hiiliani Williams, 6-4, and Purdue's No. 55 Ida Clement and Ece Gencer, 6-1, for their fifth and sixth ranked wins together. On the singles side, Monfils took down Teodosescu, 6-3, 6-4, on court one while Dorner downed Nicole Teodosescu, 6-1, 6-1, at the four spot. 
  • Maria Daciana Ciubotaru clinched the Blue & White victory over Purdue. She earned a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kathryn Wilson on court five for her seventh match-clinching victory of the spring, including the last six PSU triumphs. 
  • The tandem of Patricia Grigoras and Maiko Uchijima went 2-0 as a pair with both wins on court two. They downed Indiana’s Elisabeth Dunac and Nicole Sifuentes, 6-2, and Purdue’s Ashlie Wilson and Kathryn Wilson, 6-2. 
  • Grigoras earned a court two singles victory in the win against the Boilermakers as she bested Clement, 6-1, 6-1. Brianna Baldi joined Grigoras and Ciubotaru with singles wins against Purdue as she secured a 6-4, 7-6 triumph over Emmi Kolyszko on court six. 

ACROSS THE NET 

WASHINGTON 

  • Washington is ranked No. 22 in the latest ITA poll with a 17-3 (8-3 Big Ten) record. The Huskies opened the season 12-0. The team will play No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday to close the regular season. 
  • Washington is coming off wins over Minnesota and Wisconsin last weekend by a combined score of 8-1. Other Big Ten wins include Rutgers, Maryland, Oregon, Iowa, Northwestern and Illinois. The team’s only losses have been against Nebraska, No. 10 USC and No. 19 UCLA.  
  • The Huskies have a ranked doubles pair in No. 82 Erika Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit. The duo is 10-3 on court one this spring with three Big Ten wins. 
  • Matsuda is No. 82 in the singles rankings with a 6-4 (2-4 Big Ten) record on court one in the spring.   
  • No. 84 Reece Carter is another ranked singles player for Washington. She boasts a 15-1 record on court two this spring with seven Big Ten victories. 

OREGON 

  • Oregon is No. 70 in the ITA poll. The team is 12-11 (3-8 Big Ten). The Ducks will make the trip to Happy Valley following a contest at No. 5 Ohio State on Friday.  
  • Oregon snapped a six-match losing streak with a win over Minnesota last weekend. The team’s other Big Ten wins are against Rutgers and Iowa. The Ducks have dropped matches against Maryland, No. 22 Washington, Nebraska, Illinois, Northwestern, No. 19 UCLA and No. 10 USC. 
  • Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons are 12-9 on court one this spring. The pair has two ranked victories together. 
  • Jagare plays on the top court for singles. She is 10-7 in the spring with five Big Ten victories. She boasts two ranked wins since the fall. Symons is 8-8 on court two with two Big Ten triumphs. 

SERIES HISTORY 

WASHINGTON 

  • Friday will be the first-ever meeting between Penn State and Washington. The Huskies played their first season in the Big Ten last year. 

OREGON 

  • Friday will be the first-ever meeting between Penn State and Oregon. The Ducks are in their second season as a Big Ten Conference member.
