UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State earned the program's 30th Big Ten home opener win with a 1-0 victory against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. The Blue & White moved to 3-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference, while Minnesota dropped to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten.
Junior forward Aubrey Kulpa tallied her third goal of the season and ninth point in seven matches with a score in the first half. Freshman forward Olivia Robinson earned her second assist of the season on the game-winning goal.
Kulpa led Penn State in shots with four including two on target. Freshman midfielder Paige Pasinski and junior defender Bella Ayscue joined Kulpa with two shots on target while senior forward, and former Golden Gopher, Paige Kalal finished with three shots.
The Nittany Lions owned the contest from beginning to end, finishing with a decisive 18-7 edge in shots. PSU only allowed two of Minnesota’s seven shots to reach redshirt senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress, who saved them both. Penn State held a crucial edge in corner kicks as well, with 11 compared to just four for the Gophers.
Gress earned her first complete shutout of the season, having started the Bucknell and Brown matches before being relieved by freshman Lily Selvy late in the second half of both victories. Gress and the Nittany Lions have now recorded back-to-back shutouts against Big Ten opponents at Jeffrey Field dating back to last season’s 3-0 victory over Ohio State to close the regular season.
With the win, the Blue & White continued to hold a substantial edge in the all-time series between the two sides. Penn State now boasts a 27-6-2 lead in the series and remain unbeaten at home against Minnesota since 2015.
FIRST HALF
Soon after the starting whistle, the Nittany Lions earned their first opportunity of the match on a corner kick as sophomore defender Hannah Jordan's header flew off target at the 1:21 mark. Junior defender Bella Ayscue forced the first save of the match from the Minnesota keeper just over eight minutes into play.
The middle minutes of the half turned into a physical battle of possessions between the conference rivals with neither side being able to find the back of the net despite a few shot opportunities. The half finished with 11 total fouls as the Nittany Lions and Golden Gophers worked to maintain the ball.
The Blue & White broke through at the 33:01 mark of the match as Robinson's defensive efforts led her into the top of Minnesota's box following a turnover. She dribbled to the left goal post, serving a pass to Kulpa that she sent past the Gopher keeper to give Penn State a 1-0 lead.
The score would hold for the remainder of the half with the Nittany Lions outshooting Minnesota 10-4 in the frame.
SECOND HALF
The Golden Gophers started the second half with a push to tie the matchup. However, Penn State was successful in suppressing Minnesota's pressure while countering with more shots of their own to grow the divide between the two sides in shot totals. The Blue & White would finish with an 8-3 edge in shots during the half.
The Nittany Lions nearly extended their lead with three consecutive corner kicks between the 61:03 and 62:18 marks of the frame. For the half, PSU would total eight corner kicks compared to four for the Golden Gophers.
The physicality of the contest continued through the second half. With just over 15 minutes left on the clock, a yellow card was awarded to Minnesota's Ellen Neuharth for unsportsmanlike conduct after a foul. Not long after, Penn State's Ayscue was shown a card as well.
The Nittany Lion back line proved too much for Minnesota as the unit would only allow one shot in the half to reach the hands of Gress with the team effort allowing Penn State to record its third clean sheet of the season.
