UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lions (2-1) secured the team’s second win and second shutout of the 2026 season over the Villanova Wildcats at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon, 2-0. Penn State has now recorded shutouts in back-to-back games.
Senior captain Natalie Freeman led all Penn State players with five shots and three points while Joji Purdy scored off a penalty corner for the second straight game. Freeman, sophomore Lara Pyle and newcomer Sienna Dunn all recorded assists on the afternoon. In the cage, Aby Deverka notched a season-high four saves on four shots faced while putting together another clean sheet. The Nittany Lions outshot the Wildcats, 13-10, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 4-3.
FIRST PERIOD | PSU 0 – Villanova 0
The game opened to a defensive stalemate between the two programs. Villanova shot first with the attempt going wide before 11 minutes of trading blows in the midfield. Late in the first period, Freeman attempted her first shot of the contest, but it also went wide as both teams were unable to convert on opportunities.
SECOND PERIOD | PSU 0 – Villanova 0
Penn State started finding its offensive footing in the second period. Freeman’s shot was saved by the Villanova goalie while Ella Gaitan took a pair of shots on the Nittany Lions’ first penalty corner of the afternoon, but both found opposing players before making it into the cage. The Penn State defense continued to hold steadfast, only allowing a single shot with Deverka saving it and not giving up a penalty corner.
THIRD PERIOD | PSU 1 – Villanova 0
The Nittany Lions were finally able to convert on their opportunities in the third period. Penn State’s offense continued to put pressure on the Wildcats’ defense with six shots and a pair of penalty corners. On the first penalty corner, a shot from Purdy was blocked from a Villanova defender. On the second penalty corner, a shot from Gaitan was saved, but Dunn tipped the rebound towards the turf and Freeman was able to find daylight to score the first goal of the contest. The Wildcats attempted a penalty corner of their own, but a block and another Deverka save kept Villanova off the score sheet.
FOURTH PERIOD | PSU 2 – Villanova 0
The Wildcats were able to flip the script and put pressure on the Penn State defense throughout the fourth. Villanova recorded six shots to Penn State’s three and held the penalty corner advantage in the final period, two to one. Despite the offensive discrepancies, the Nittany Lions’ defense held firm and strong saves and clears from Deverka kept the Wildcats from scoring. Penn State was able to convert on its limited opportunities in the fourth and Purdy, off a penalty corner insert from Freeman and a stoppage from Pyle, was able to secure her third goal of the year to finish off the Wildcats.
