UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State earned its fifth clean sheet in Big Ten Conference competition with a 1-0 victory over Rutgers on Saturday evening. A crowd of 1,531 fans packed into Jeffrey Field, setting a new season high in attendance.
The Nittany Lions improved to 7-3-4 and 5-2-2 in the Big Ten, now sitting at 17 points in league play, while the Scarlet Knights dropped to 4-6-4, 3-5-1 in the Big Ten.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress had a stellar performance, collecting four saves, while setting a new career-high in shutouts in a season with her fifth of the 2026 campaign. The Lyndhurst, New Jersey native made multiple leaping saves to hold Rutgers off the scoreboard.
Senior forward Paige Kalal tallied her fifth goal of the season, third on a penalty kick, as she has proven to be automatic from the dot. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native led Penn State with four shots. She ranks second on the team in goals and points (14).
The Nittany Lion back line proved highly effective with blocked shots throughout the evening. Despite allowing 17 shots, Penn State only allowed four to reach Gress, who saved them all. On the opposite end, the Blue & White recorded 15 shots, the seventh time this season attempting 15 or more.
FIRST HALF
Penn State started the match with its defense set high into the offensive zone with pressure forcing the Scarlet Knights into turnovers, which would prove to be a common thread in the opening half of action.
The first offensive threat of the match came from Rutgers on a foul just outside of the 18-yard box. However, the Nittany Lions were quick to respond. Six minutes into the match, freshman forward Ellie Kocher curved a shot in the direction of the goal, hitting the left side post. As the play continued on, Kalal also got her first opportunity but was slightly off target.
In the 16th minute, Kocher sent a shot that was deflected by a Rutgers defender and saved by the team's netminder. Penn State decided to challenge the defender's contact, questioning a possible handball. The challenge was successful, leading the Nittany Lions to the penalty mark. Kalal stepped up to the dot and buried her shot into the top right of the net to score the deciding goal.
With 30 minutes on the clock, the Scarlet Knights earned a dangerous free kick opportunity just outside the box. The Rutgers attacker shot the ball to the upper right side of the goal, but Gress jumped and punched the ball away, keeping the lead safe with a remarkable save.
After a corner kick opportunity, sophomore defender Hannah Jordan found the back of the net, but the goal was quickly overturned for an offside call. With 10 seconds on the clock, the same happened on the opposite side of the field as Rutgers thought they tied the match.
Penn State tallied 10 shots while holding the Scarlet Knights to only three during the first stanza as the squad dominated possession time for much of the half and headed into the break with a 1-0 lead.
SECOND HALF
Out of the break, Rutgers looked to equalize before Gress shut down the Scarlet Knights’ first chance just under three minutes into the half. Penn State's first threat came minutes later as a shot by Kocher was saved. Gress would collect two more impressive saves in the 61st and 65th minutes.
In the 53rd minute, junior forward Aubrey Kulpa nearly doubled the lead but her shot just grazed over the top of the crossbar. Five minutes after that, Kulpa took aim with another strike, but that shot found the hands of Rutgers netminder.
The game continued with back-and-forth chances for the conference rivals with neither side being able to find a great opportunity. The Blue & White back line blocked multiple shots in the middle minutes of the period.
The first and only yellow card of the match was awarded to Rutgers for unsporting behavior in the 83rd minute following a hard foul. The defense once again kept the Scarlet Knights from scoring with a stretch of three straight blocked shots in the 88th minute.
With just over a minute to plays, Rutgers challenged for a handball inside the penalty box. After review, the call on the field stood, bringing relief to the 1,531 fans in attendance at Jeffrey Field. Rutgers was only able to muster one shot that went wide after the review, allowing Penn State to secure its fifth clean sheet in Big Ten play.
