Student-Athlete Mental Health

What do we do
Penn State University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is committed to meeting the needs of all Penn State students, including those with unique needs and circumstances. It is broadly understood that student-athletes experience unique stresses due to competing demands for academic and social development as well as performance within their chosen sport. Additionally, travel, time, and energy constraints may impact a student-athlete’s ability to receive services to support their growth and wellbeing. CAPS provides developmentally-appropriate and culturally-sensitive care for student athletes to ameliorate distress and promote human flourishing in-line with the central mission of intercollegiate athletics to “prepare our student-athletes for a lifetime of impact.”

How do we do it
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) serves as the primary mental health service provider for Penn State Athletics. CAPS works collaboratively with the athletic department to provide group and individual counseling, crisis intervention, psychological and psychiatric evaluations, as well as education and consultation services to meet the unique needs of our student-athletes. If you would like to learn more about treatment options, please call CAPS at (814) 863-0395 to schedule a free phone consultation or ask an allied health staff member for a referral.
