All-American 2019
AS A JUNIOR IN 2018-19: VanBenthuysen finished her Junior year as Nittany Lion with a 28-16 record that included four shut out performances. VanBenthuysen earned a spot at the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals where she finished first in Women’s epee, her second consecutive first place finish (Women’s foil, 2018), and qualified for the NCAA Championships where she finished thirteenth in Women’s epee.
AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2017-18: VanBenthuysen had a great sophomore year as a Nittany Lion. She was able to achieve five shutout performances and a 38-17 record, which allowed her to fence at the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regional where she claimed first place in Women’s foil and a spot in the NCAA Championship. At the NCAA Championship, VanBenthuysen took eighth in the foil earning All-American honors.
AS A FRESHMAN IN 2016-17: VanBenthuysen had a stellar first season as a Nittany Lion. The freshman finished the season with a 32-13 record which included four 3-0 performances. VanBenthuysen went on to compete at the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regional where she finished 23rd.
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Barbara VanBenthuysen is from Spring, Texas. She previously fenced for Alliance Fencing Academy under head coach Andrey Ceva. VanBenthuysen chose Penn State because of its atmosphere, and she plans to major in anthropology.
