Senior Nick Chinman heads into his final season with the Penn State fencing team as the defending NCAA National Champion in the foil. The three-time All-American heads into the 2009-10 season with a chance to eclipse the 100 career win mark. Chinman was voted team captain by his teammates and will use his extensive experience to help Penn State in its defense of last year[apos]s NCAA team title (the 11th in school history).
LION CAREER:
2008-09: Chinman was a rare two-weapon standout for Penn State last year, combining to post a 34-9 record in both the foil and the epee. His 16-6 mark in the foil led to a third place finish at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships. But two weeks after regionals, Chinman stormed his way to this third All-America medal and his first NCAA National Championship.
2007-08: Chinman marked a 34-4 overall record in dual meet action last year. His .895 win percentage last year tied for the team lead with James Moody. After winning the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional title. Chinman took a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. The two-time All-American posted dual match records of 13-0, 13-2, 7-2, and 3-0. He was a leading scorer in the U.S. Junior Team winning World Championships in Italy this past summer.
2006-07: Chinman posted a superb 26-7 record in duals last year, grabbing the starting spot in January and blazing to the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional title. His championship there earned him a spot in the NCAA tournament, where he placed fifth to become an All-American as a freshman. Chinman posted dual match records of 11-3, 11-2 and 5-2.
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Chinman is a native of Boulder, Colo., and is majoring in Material Science Engineering.
