Josh Nelson, Ed.D., SCCC, CSCS, USAW
Dr. Nelson currently serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Applied Health & Performance Science at Penn State University. Nelson leads areas of sport science and education and works to connect all areas of the University Community including athletics, academics, and key stakeholders in global sports science.
Prior to Penn State, Nelson was at Baylor University (TX) as the Director of Applied Performance and Operations where he was in charge of the management of all day to day operations regarding athlete wellness monitoring, technology systems, and performance education. In addition to his role within the Division of Applied Performance, Nelson also served as the Performance Coach for Baylor Baseball, as an adjunct instructor within the Health, Human Performance, and Recreation Department, and manages part-time workers and student practicum experiences in the department.
From 2012-2013 Nelson coached at Emory & Henry College (VA) where he spent two years as an assistant football coach in charge of wide receivers and as the coordinator of strength and conditioning. Also at E&H, Nelson was an adjunct faculty member in the Health and Physical Education Department.
Nelson completed his doctorate degree in Coaching and Teaching Studies from West Virginia University. From 2009 to 2012, he was a graduate teaching assistant and instructor in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Science at WVU. Additionally, during his time at WVU, Nelson was a contracted strength and conditioning coach at several high schools in the Morgantown area, was appointed a representative on the National Strength and Conditioning Association -- Virginia board of representatives, and was the faculty representative for the Athletic Coaching Education club at WVU.
Nelson is a 2009 Emory & Henry College graduate where he earned his undergraduate degree in Health & Physical Education and master's degree in Education. As an undergraduate, Nelson was a four-year letter winner on the baseball team as an infielder and a student assistant coach for the football staff were he worked with wide receivers, film breakdown, and recruiting. Nelson is certified with the CSCCa (SCCC), the NSCA (CSCS), and with USA Weightlifting (L1).
Josh and his wife Rachel reside in State College with their son Beckett Trigg.
