STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ?C May 25, 2006 ?C Penn State women??s tennis player Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) has been selected by the NCAA as one of 352 student-athletes to attend the 10th annual NCAA Leadership Conference, slated for May 28-June 1 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Those selected to attend the NCAA Leadership Conference have been tabbed as current or future leaders on their college campuses. Shular was one of 352 student-athletes selected from a total of 1,319 nomination forms that were submitted by college and university officials who have NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills programs on their campuses. Selection criteria for the conference included the student-athletes' demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and their potential to benefit significantly from a leadership development experience.
Shular finished her sophomore campaign with the Penn State women??s tennis team with an overall singles record of 13-12 in 2005-06. She recorded a 9-11 dual-match mark, and went 5-8 in doubles action on the season. The Georgia native picked up an important win at No. 4 singles at the 2006 Big Ten Championships, as the Nittany Lions rallied to defeat Minnesota in first-round action by a score of 4-3.
The Lions completed their season with a 9-13 overall record after losing to eventual champion Northwestern Wildcats in the Big Ten Championship quarterfinals.
The conference serves as a forum to enhance leadership and decision-making skills, and provides an opportunity to discuss key issues in intercollegiate athletics. During the conference, student-athletes will discuss a variety of topics such as sportsmanship, public perceptions of student-athletes, conflict resolution, student-athlete mental health, and social responsibilities, among other things. In addition to speaker and discussion sessions, the student-athletes will participate in team building games at Disney??s Wide World of Sports Complex.
A total of 39 coaches, athletics administrators and program facilitators will join Shular and the rest of the student-athletes at the conference. In addition, members representing each division??s national Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will lead discussion sessions and group activities.
