COLLEGE PARK, Md. September 22, 2006 - The Nittany Lions women??s tennis team opened its 2006-07 season at the University of Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.

The Nittany Lions struggled in doubles play going 0-2 as Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Qu??bec) and Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) lost 8-1 to LSU??s Nicole Kantor and Staten Spencer and Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) dropped an 8-5 to Maryland??s Julia Graca and Brooke Rogers.

??We came out shaky in the doubles,?? assistant coach Katie Dougherty said. ??But our freshman shook it off in the singles with a rebound.??

In singles action, Niculescu beat Stacey Percival of West Virginia University, 6-4, 6-4, but then lost in the second round to Maryland??s Marianne Baker (7-5, 6-0). Dohanics posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Maryland??s Lisa Miller, while Lotto defeated Masha Senic of UMD, 6-3, 6-4. McCarthy topped West Virginia??s Colleen Speaker (6-4, 6-0).

The Nittany Lions will resume play tomorrow beginning at 9am.
