Men?' Swimming Finishes Seventh at Big Ten Championships


Freshman Tim Williams earned sixth place in the 200 fly in the final day of the Big Ten Championships.


COLUMBUS, Ohio; February 18, 2007 - Sophomore Patrick Schirk??s (Pottstown, Pa.) runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke highlighted the final night of Big Ten championship competition for Penn State, as it finished seventh overall with a total of 295 points. Minnesota won the Big Ten men??s swimming championship with 612.5 points, Michigan finished second with 608.5.

Schirk??s NCAA ??A?? qualifying time of 1:42.74 earned him the runner-up finish and 17 team points in the 200-yard backstroke, while Daniel Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) came in 13th place, scoring four points for the Nittany Lions. Schirk finished as Penn State??s high scorer with 31 points. Fimbianti??s time of 1:46.70 was under the NCAA ??B?? qualifying time.

Penn State??s 400 freestyle relay team finished in a time of 2:54.78, earning an NCAA ??B?? qualifying mark en route to third place in the finals. The finish earned the Nittany Lions 32 team points.

In the 200 fly, freshman Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio) took sixth place, earning 13 points, in an NCAA ??B?? qualifying time of 1:46.60.

Three Lions scored points in the 1650 free, led by sophomore Chris Sullivan??s (Naples, Fla.) sixth-place finish. Sullivan finished in an NCAA ??B?? qualifying time of 15:11.58. Sophomore David Kraft (Vienna, Va.) was 10th with a 15:19.28. Freshman Ben Ryan (State Collage, Pa.) scored in his first Big Ten championships, finishing 12th in the event with a time of 15:25.25. With their times, Kraft and Ryan also earned NCAA ??B?? qualifying marks. All told, the trio earned 25 points for Penn State in the event.

Senior Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.) finished 10th in the 100 freestyle with an NCAA ??B?? qualifying mark of 44.04, earning the Lions seven points. Junior Sean Swanepoel (Lincoln Mead, South Africa) was 15th with a 44.40, also an NCAA ??B?? qualifying mark.

Junior Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) took 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke to round out the scoring for Penn State on the final day of competition. His time of 2:00.72 was also below the NCAA ??B?? qualifying mark.

Penn State scored in every event held at this year??s Big Ten Championships with the exception of the platform diving, which the Nittany Lions do not compete in.

In addition, Kraft was named Penn State??s sportsmanship honoree.
