Oct. 1, 2007

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Men's soccer's Vincent Salvatico (Chester Springs, Pa.) and women's soccer's Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) have been named this week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week. Salvatico came off the bench to net the game-winning goal in Penn State's 2-1 upset of previously unbeaten and third-ranked Northwestern Saturday while Schoepfer scored two goals in the Nittany Lions' mid-week game with Colgate (W, 5-0) and followed it up with PSU's first goal of the day Sunday vs. Illinois (W, 2-1).

Katie Schoepfer

Salvatico, a sophomore midfielder, scored on an off-balance shot in the game's 66th minute to lift the Nittany Lions to the key conference victory. The goal was his team-high second game winner of the season. This week's Male Student-Athlete of the Week has a total of 15 points and 28 shots this season and has helped his team reach a current 4-4-1 (1-0-1 Big Ten) record.

As Female Student-Athlete of the Week, Schoepher continued her offensive onslaught and marked her sixth straight game that she has scored at least one point, helping Penn State to a current 7-2-1 (1-0 Big Ten) record. This sophomore forward also nailed one off the post vs. the Illini, nearly giving herself another goal for the week. Schoepfer's six goals in 2007 is just two away from her freshman year total of eight with the Nittany Lions only 10 games into the season. Schoepfer also earned a place on Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week for her efforts.

These two student-athletes will look to continue their success on the road in the coming week as the men's team battles Ohio State (5-2-2) in Columbus on Sat., Oct. 6. at 2 p.m. The women's team will look to top Wisconsin in Madison on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. and Northwestern in Evanston on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a noon start.
