Women's Tennis Earns Three Doubles Wins on Final Day of USTA/NTC Invitational

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Penn State women's tennis team concluded competition at the USTA/National Tennis Center Invitational Sunday with three doubles wins and a pair of singles victories.

Freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned a straight-set win over Alina Sullivan of Boston College (6-4, 6-2), while sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) picked up a default win over Army's Sara Gildes.

In other singles action, Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) dropped a hard-fought three-set match to Dartmouth's Meg Zebroski (2-6, 6-4, 10-8). Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came up short against Long Island's Selma Babic (6-1, 6-2), while Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) lost to Penn's Alexa Ely (7-5, 7-6). Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) jumped out to the early lead with a 6-3 victory in the first set over Columbia's Lauren Shearer, but dropped the next two sets 6-4, 15-13. Additionally, Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision to Yale's Petrelli Stevi and walk-on Julie Raezer fell to Long Island's Ashley Spicer (6-1, 6-0).

The Nittany Lions had a strong performance in doubles on Sunday as Shular and McCarthy teamed to pick up an 8-4 win over Army's Kristin Beehler and Niki Flach. Lotto and Morzan also earned an 8-6 win over Brown's Emily Ellis and Kelley Kirkpatrick, while Dohanics and Zobeideh defeated Boston College's Jacqueline Mabatah and Gia Nafarrette, 8-5. Also on the court in doubles play Sunday were Holzberg and Raezer, who lost to N.C. State's Neils Barringer and Catherine Grotz, 8-2.

Following the week off, selected individuals will participate in the ITA Regionals in Richmond, Va. The Nittany Lions will host the Penn State Invitational Nov. 9-11 at the Sarni Tennis Center.
