Soccer America Gives Schoepfer Team of the Week Honors

Oct. 9, 2007

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore striker Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) earned her second honor of the week as she was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. Schoepfer extended her scoring streak to eight games on the Nittany Lions Big Ten road trip this past weekend with an assist at Wisconsin on Friday and a goal and an assist at Northwestern on Sunday. The weekend's scores gave her a team leading 17 points on the season with seven goals and three assists.

Schoepfer started off the Nittany Lions' two-win Big Ten weekend with an assist on PSU's final goal of the game by Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) helping Penn State to a 2-0 victory. On Sunday, Schoepfer had the assist on Aubrey Aden-Buie's (Allentown, Pa.) second goal of the day, the game-winner for the striker, and then gave the Nittany Lions a little extra padding by scoring the third goal in the 3-1 win in Evanston.

Schoepfer had been scoreless through the Nittany Lions' first four games before the home opener at Jeffrey Field on Sept. 14 against James Madison where her eight game scoring streak began. She netted the game-winner against the previously unbeaten Dukes before getting the game-tying goal in the last five minutes of Penn State's 1-1 tie vs. No. 5 Texas A&M on Sept. 16. At Bucknell on Sept. 19, Schoepfer earned her first points on the road, as she netted the game-winner off an assist from Ashley Myers (Bel Air, Md.) early in the second half. She added an assist at Notre Dame on Penn State's first goal by Myers, marking the fourth straight game that the sophomore forward had been involved in either the game-winning or game-tying goal. Her two goals vs. Colgate extended her point streak to five consecutive games, tying her longest collegiate scoring streak, set last year between Sept. 22 and Oct. 6. Schoepfer quickly broke her personal record as she scored the first goal in PSU's 2-1 win over Illinois on Sept. 30.

The Nittany Lions are 9-2-1 and are back in the Top 10 in the country this week according to the NSCAA. PSU plays host to Michigan State and Michigan on Homecoming weekend in Happy Valley this Friday and Saturday. The Spartans come to town on Friday, Oct. 12, for a 7 p.m. match, and the Lions match-up with the Wolverines on Sunday at noon. Both matches will be played at Jeffrey Field. Penn State will also be honored during the football game vs. Madison for their ninth consecutive Big Ten championship.
