University Park, Pa. - The Penn State baseball team was recently awarded an NCAA Public Recognition Award. The NCAA Public Recognition Award is presented to teams that have an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport.
The APR is a three-year old, NCAA-designed system that calculates the progress each student-athlete as well as each team and overall athletic program is making toward graduation. The APR, combined with the NCAA-calculated Graduation Success Rate (GSR) determines graduation and retention rates a little differently than the federal graduation rates. Under the APR system, points are given based on remaining in academic good-standing as well as remaining enrolled at the respective institution.
The Penn State baseball team has had an excellent history of academic success. The team also earned a graduation success rate of 73 percent in the latest GSR report, well above the national average GSR for the sport of baseball.
The Nittany Lions will open their season the weekend of February 22-24 when they travel to play at High Point.
