UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; - The Penn State women's tennis team won their first match of the spring season tonight after beating the Bison of Bucknell, 7-0 in their home opener.
Seniors Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) set the tone for the night topping Lauren Lucido and Tania Varela, 8-4. Sophomores Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) had a convincing 8-1 win over Carlin Calcaterra and Paulina Gamboa. Juniors Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clinched the doubles point for Penn State with an 8-2 win over Dara Dwojewski and Caitlin Baffa.
In singles action, the Nittany Lions continued to dominate winning all six matches. BeVard had a tough three-set win over Varela (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) and Shular topped Gamboa (6-2, 6-0). Lotto also played a three-set match but came out on top in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Lucido. Holzberg beat Calcaterra in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), while McCarthy picked up a victory over Dwojewski (6-2, 6-4). Dohanics finished out the day for Penn State with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Baffa.
The Nittany Lions will be on the road for the next two weekends starting in Denver on Sunday, Jan. 27 where they will take on the Pioneers. The next home match for the Nittany Lions will be Friday, Feb. 8 versus Marshall at 5 p.m.
