Nittany Lions Compete on First Day of Michigan Quad Meet

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Competing against three of the best men's swimming and diving teams in the Big Ten, the Penn State men's swimming and diving team trails Michigan 113-35, trails Ohio State 106.5-41.5 and trails Northwestern by just eight points, 78-70 after the first night of the two-day, quad meet hosted by Michigan. The meet is Penn State's final tuneup prior to Big Ten Championships, which are later this month and will also be held at Michigan.

Pat Schirk led the way for the Nittany Lions on the first day of the meet as he finished second in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 1:46.41. Finishing in third place for the Nittany Lions was the 400 freestyle relay team of Vincent Reydams, Sean Swanepoel, Schirk and Sean Biedermann, as they finished in 3:02.30.

Penn State also had two fourth place finishes. First up was the 400 medley relay team of Schirk, Kyle Miranda, Tim Williams and Sean Swanepoel, who finished in 3:20.57. Also placing fourth was Williams in the 200 butterfly in 1:49.63.

Other highlights for the men included Dito Calderon finishing seventh in the 1000 free in 9:27.59. In the 50 free, Penn State finished 6-8-9 with Reydams tying for sixth in :21.09. He was followed closely by Rob Felty in eighth in :21.13 and Jason Goldner in ninth in :21.18.

Action gets underway at noon on Saturday.
