Feb. 5, 2008

University Park, Pa. - With the 2008 season less than three weeks away now, Penn State continued its national recognition during the preseason as the Nittany Lion baseball squad was picked to finish second in the Big Ten by Collegiate Baseball, a monthly magazine devoted to amateur baseball. Earlier during the preseason, Penn State also received votes in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top 40 poll and junior relief pitcher Drew O'Neil was named a third team Louisville Slugger preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

The Nittany Lions were picked second to Michigan in the preseason predicted order of finish for the Big Ten by Collegiate Baseball. After Penn State were Ohio State, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern and Indiana in that order. The Nittany Lions were also picked to finish third in the Big Ten earlier this preseason by Rivals.com.

Penn State returns seven of nine position starters and seven pitchers from last year as well, including relief ace O'Neil. Penn State also welcomes eight recruited newcomers, including a pair of junior college starting pitchers. The Lions will open the 2008 season two weeks from this Friday when they travel to High Point, N.C. for a three-game series with High Point.
