UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.: February 5, 2008 - Following an NCAA provisional-qualifying performance at last weekend's Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, senior Briene Simmons (Decatur, Ga.) has been named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, announced by conference offices on Tuesday. The award is the first of Simmons' outstanding career, and the second in-a-row for the Nittany Lions, as classmate Dominique Blake (Bronx, N.Y.) garnered conference honors last week.
Simmons, who was making her final career appearance at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track, clipped off a season-best 2:07.84 in the 800-meters last Saturday, good for second in a speedy field, which included three provisional performances. Simmons, already an NCAA All-American in the event, is currently ranked third in the Big Ten, and sixth in the NCAA. Simmons also led off Penn State's provisional 4x400-meter relay (3:39.19) to close out the weekend.
Simmons and the Nittany Lions will be on the road for the rest of the indoor season, starting their travels this weekend at the Virginia Tech Elite, to be held Feb. 8-9, in Blacksburg, Va.
