UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior midfielder and team co-captain Jessi Lieb (Villanova, Pa.) and former Penn State great Michele DeJuliis have been named to the United States touring team that will represent the country in the upcoming Prague Cup in the Czech Republic in June. Lieb will serve as an alternate while DeJuliis has been placed on the active roster.
The Prague Cup, which will be held from June 25-28, will feature five other national teams including the Czech Republic, England, Germany, Scotland, and Wales. The United States team was selected from the U.S. Elite and Developmental teams following the U.S. Lacrosse Champions Challenge on January 26-27 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Despite missing part or all of Penn State's final five games in 2007 due to an injury, Lieb earned First Team All-West/Midwest Region honors for the second straight season. A two-time First Team All-ALC midfielder, she was a force for the Nittany Lions on both ends of the field in 2007, ranking among team leaders in goals (26), assists (13), points (39), ground balls (32), and caused turnovers (19). Before both the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Lieb was selected as a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate.
DeJuliis, a 1998 Penn State grad, finished her collegiate career with her status as one of the greatest players in Nittany Lion women's lacrosse history firmly established. A two-time US Lacrosse All-American and three-time Brine/IWLCA All-American, she ranks prominently in several career statistical categories, including seventh in points (203), eighth in goals (142), and 10th in assists (tie, 61). DeJuliis was inducted into the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame as part of its 2008 class last week.
Penn State will kick off the 2008 season on Sun., Feb. 17 when it hosts Cornell in a 1:30 p.m. scrimmage. The Nittany Lions will take to the road for their first regular season contest when they meet in-state foe Temple on Sat., Feb. 23 (1 p.m.) in Philadelphia.
