University Park, Pa.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (4-5, 1-1) earned its third straight win Sunday after defeating the Columbia Lions, 6-0. The Nittany Lions earned two wins by default due to injury on Columbia's roster, one in doubles and one in singles.
Competing first in doubles was sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) who defeated Carling Donovan and Natalia Christenson, 8-2. Junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) paired up to defeat Columbia's Stephanie Zilberman and Kim McMenamin, 8-4. Senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) earned the third doubles win by default for the Nittany Lions.
From the start of singles, Penn State was up 1-0 after freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned a win by default. Bevard, whose match closed out the evening, earned a thrilling win over Zilberman (7-5, 7-6 (9-7)). Holzberg and Lotto both had convincing wins over their Columbia opponents. Holzberg defeated Donovan, 6-0, 6-1, and Lotto took down Christenson, 6-1, 6-0. Morzan defeated Columbia's number four singles player McMenamin (6-2, 6-0).
"I am proud of how we carried ourselves today," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "Everyone stepped on the court ready to play and it showed in our results."
The Nittany Lions will head back out on the road next week on their spring break trip to the Midwest. Up first is Oklahoma State on March 11, followed by Wichita State on March 12. Both matches will begin at 2 p.m.
