University Park, Pa.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (8-12, 2-7 Big Ten) came up short today against Indiana, falling 5-2 to the No. 29 Hoosiers.
The Nittany Lions fell behind early losing all three doubles matches. Sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) paired with senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and fell, 8-4, to Brianna Williams and Katya Zapadalova. Indiana's Alba Berdala and Lindsey Stuckey proved to be too much for senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.). The Nittany Lion duo also fell 8-4 to their Hoosier opponents. Sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) closed doubles action, falling to Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel, 8-5.
In singles action, Shular and McCarthy both had convincing wins over their Hoosier opponents. Shular defeated Zapadalova 6-4, 6-1, and McCarthy beat Stuckey 6-1, 6-0. Holzberg fell in a tough match to Charlotte Martin (6-4, 6-3), Dohanics lost to Fischer (6-2, 6-0), and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) dropped a three-set match to Williams (3-6, 6-2, 6-2). BeVard closed out today's match in an exciting three-set match. After dropping the first set 6-3, BeVard fought back to take the second set 7-6 (7-1), but could not close of the win and fell 6-2 in the final set.
"Shular and McCarthy played great today in their singles," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "I am proud of them. We had our chances at No. 6 and No. 1 singles and unfortunately couldn't pull them out."
The Nittany Lions will be back in action on Sunday facing the No. 33 Ohio State Buckeyes. Action begins at 11 a.m. and weather permitting, the match will take place outside at the Sarni Tennis Center.
