UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's tennis team (8-13, 2-6 Big Ten) fell in its final home match of the 2007-08 season today to No. 33 Ohio State. Senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned Penn State's two points this afternoon as the Nittany Lions fell to the Buckeyes, 5-2.
Ohio State (19-6, 6-4) dominated doubles action, winning all three matches. Angela DiPastina and Christina Keesey beat Shular and sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario), 8-4. Senior Katelyn BeVard and junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fell to Ohio State's Julie Blackmore and Cami Hubbs, 8-1. Junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore partner Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) dropped their match to Paloma Escobedo and Caitlin O'Keefe, 8-5.
Shular won her Senior Day singles match, defeating DiPastina (6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-0). Zobeideh also played a three-set match taking down O'Keefe (6-4, 2-6, 6-0). BeVard fell to Escobedo (7-5, 6-3) and Holzberg dropped her match to Blackmore (6-1, 6-2). Ohio State's Hubbs defeated Dohanics (6-1, 6-2) and Keesey took down McCarthy (6-3, 6-0).
"Ohio State came in here and played us very tight," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "They were very determined. I hope this weekend made the team hungrier for Big Tens."
The Penn State women's tennis team has now closed out its regular season and will spend part of the upcoming week preparing for the Big Ten Championship. The Nittany Lions will head to Purdue for the championship with action beginning Thursday, April 24.
