PORTLAND, Oreg.- - In what has been a busy spring for the Penn State women's soccer team and it's involvment in U.S. Soccer, sophomore All-American Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) recently returned from training camp with the U.S. U-23 National Team. The team opened up their weeklong training camp with a solid (7-1) victory over the University of Portland in front of 3,500 fans at Merlo Field. Inside of eight minutes of game time, the U.S. was up 2-0. After Portland's Jessica Tsao accounted for the opponent's lone goal. The U.S. then went on a rampage, scoring five consecutive goals, with forward Schoepfer netting the one before halftime. The training camp ended April 24.
All-Anerica and All-Region pick Schoepfer will play for the SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds this summer after rounding-out an outstanding campaign this past fall. The first team All-Big Ten pick got seven of her goals during Big Ten play and had seven game-winning goals in the 2007. Three of her gamewinners came in conference action. Schoepfer was 35th nationally in goals per game, scoring 0.625 a match, and was tops in the Big Ten in points per game (1.46) and goals per game (0.62). She had the game-winning or game-tying goals vs. then-No. 4 Texas A&M, and down the Big Ten stretch vs. Indiana and Ohio State. Schoepfer also assisted on the game-winning goal vs. Northwestern.
Penn State finished ranked 12th in the final NSCAA poll after another outstanding campaign. Making their 13th-straight NCAA appearance, the No. 1 seeded Nittany Lions went all the way to the third round of the Tournament.
