UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 13 Penn State field hockey team scored five goals in a ten-minute span as it upended Georgetown 6-0 Friday night at the Field Hockey Field.
Christine Dudek (Harleysville, Pa.) added two goals, and Allison Scola (Hummelstown, Pa.) accumulated three points as the Nittany Lions move to 3-3 on the season. The Hoyas fell to 0-7 in the 2008 campaign.
Coming into the game sitting well behind the Big Ten in goals scored, Penn State scored a barrage of first-half goals to put the game away before halftime. It came into the game with only six goals in five games and doubled its total by day's end. The Hoyas were out-shot 36-2 by the Nittany Lions.
Although being facing 13 shots in the first 15 minutes, head coach Charlene Morett's squad had nothing to show for itself. Georgetown goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo made several key stops and the Hoya defenders, despite not being able to get the ball in its own territory, disallowed the Nittany Lions to make any gains on their penalty corners.
At the 15:57 mark, a scramble in front of the net allowed Jessica Longstreth (Richboro, Pa.) to dish the ball to Dudek, who piped it in for a score. Less than three minutes later, Dudek added her second off a Scola shot on one of Penn State's 19 penalty corners.
Amy Bonenberger (Palmyra, Pa.) fired a 14-yard shot that whistled past the goalkeeper for the second goal of the game. It was the second time Bonenberger scored from near the circle in three games.
Jen Beaumont (Chalfont, Pa.) and Ali Meves (Newtown, Pa.) earned a combined shutout against Georgetown. Beaumont did not face any shots and claimed the win, while Meyes made a kicksave off of a behind-the-back whack by Kristen Volpe and stunned a hard-hit liner from Maggie Farrand. Crovo made 18 saves on the game.
Aubrey Aden-Buie (Allentown, Pa.) scored her first goal as a member of the Penn State field hockey team at the 22-minute mark. Daneen Zug (Manheim, Pa.) fired a shot that ricocheted off a defender's stick, flung into the air over Crovo's head to where Aden-Buie was able to tap it in for a score. Aden-Buie had previously been a former starter on Penn State's women's soccer team before this season.
Gina Bartolacci (Washington Crossing, Pa.) scored her first goal of the season in the second half, and Bethany Marvel (Newtown, Pa.) earned herself an assist.
Penn State accounted for 19 penalty corners, while Georgetown had two for the game.
