Women's Tennis Earns 11 Victories on First Day of Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Inviational

Norfolk, Va.; - The Penn State women's tennis team had a strong showing at the first day of the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational, winning 11 of 12 doubles matches. The tournament continues tomorrow and Sunday at the Old Dominion University.

Headlining the list of Nittany Lions to move on in doubles play were junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland). Lotto and Mical defeated Stephanie Brown and Hannah Fick of Liberty 8-5 in the first round of the "B" Flight. The pair continued on to defeat Samantha Carnell and Ivana Petrich of Delaware 8-2 in the semifinal, followed by Barbara Couto and Carmen Jackman of UMBC in the final by a score of 8-5.

"Lotto and Mical were a stand-out doubles team for us today", said head coach Dawna Prevette. I was really excited about how well they competed together."

In other doubles play, Senior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) won 8-6 in the first round of the "A" Flight over Na-Hyun Baek and Sereeta Thompson of Hampton University. The pair defeated Alice Chen and Ana Mungo of UMBC 8-6 in the semifinal before falling to Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff of Old Dominion 8-1 in the final. Senior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned an 8-1 win in the first round of the "D" Flight over Nicole Mazza and Lindsay Spagnola of Manhattan. In the semifinal, they defeated Rachel Bergeron and Liz Black of Loyola, 8-0. Morzan and Zobeideh won the final 8-0, defeating Maria Casaletto and Angela Smith of Army.

Appearing in her first match this season, senior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the quarterfinal "C" flight doubles match with junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn) against Andie Keyser-Baker and Judy Lite of Loyola (8-1). In the semifinal Dohanics and McCarthy defeated Anahita Jagtiani and Elise Leizerovich of Drexel, 8-4, and closed the day with a victory over Kristin Gobberg and Emily Urda of Villanova, 8-5.
