Norfolk, Va.; - The Penn State women's tennis team continued it's strong performance on the second day of the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational, winning all of their singles matches. The tournament continues tomorrow at Old Dominion University with all eight Nittany Lions in semifinal action.
"I was extremely proud of the team today," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "They transitioned much better and I'm excited about tomorrow."
In singles play, sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) defeated Rachel Janasek of Loyola (6-2, 6-1) in the "B-3" flight round of 16 and continued on to beat Jess Shurtz of Army in the quarterfinal (6-2, 6-1). Junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) earned a victory in the "B-2" singles quarterfinal by defeating Emily Mannix of UMBC, 6-1, 6-3. Senior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) topped Catlin White of Towson (6-2, 6-2) in the "A-1" flight opening round and defeated Ashley Moore of Howard by a score of 6-4, 7-6(6) in the "A-1" flight quarterfinal. Freshman Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) earned a first round victory in the "B-1" flight over Elise Leizerovich of Drexel, 6-3, 6-1. Mical advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Carmen Jackman of UMBC in the quarterfinal.
In other singles play, senior Leyla Morzan (Vancover, British Columbia) earned a victory over Hannah Fick of Liberty 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 in the first round of the "C-2" Flight. Morzan later defeated Christina Ton of Manhattan in the "C-2" flight quarterfinal (6-0, 6-0). In the opening round of the "C-3" flight, senior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated Cassandra Ng of Towson, 6-2, 6-4. Dohanics earned a "C-3" quarterfinal victory over Samantha Camall of Delaware in two sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) topped Lauren Cloonan of Towson in the "A-2" flight opening round, 6-2, 7-6(3). Prishlyak advanced to the "A-2" quarterfinal, defeating Kinsey Pate of James Madison in two sets, 6-2, 6-0. Junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) defeated Amanda Campbell of Delaware 7-5, 7-5 in the "C-1" flight quarterfinal.
